Creator’s Appreciation Week - Malex Fluff

This was not meant to be a Malex Fluff list.  But about halfway through making it, I realized the list would end up skewed heavily in their favor and gave up on the idea of it being a general list. anonymous is possibly my favourite michael writer, if only because their characterisation of him is so poignant, so intense, and so consistent across all their fics. he’s a mess, a disaster, but so tender and full of love and sadness and everything else under the sun. their work has really stayed with me.

i don’t have anything profound to say about this one i just love it c; the playful michael is so delightful. no fic has made me laugh as hard as this one did. christi ended a fic with the line “they were roommates”. i mean, it’s genius.

from laughing back to crying. who knew that a fic titled “good boy” would make me sob? michael just wants to be a good man (and he is).

Second Verse, Same As The First by @hazel-athena

this is the “take me back to the start” for michael, in my opinion. the fic navigates michael’s childhood (albeit significantly sped up) so delicately that just thinking about it makes me clutch at my heart all dramatic-like. it’s an amazing character study and the fact that it’s from alex’s point of view only makes more of an impact.

Day 2 - RNM Creators Week - Relationships

I can’t mention my love of malex without mentioning my love of my two favorite writers of this relationship

@hannah-writes doesn’t just write fic, she is a poet, and meta writer, and a graphic artist. She tells stories that resonate, that grab onto your heart and settle into your mind. Her characterization of both Michael and Alex is both flawless and heartrending. AND she does all this while also being an absolutely lovely human and friend. I’m very very lucky she reached out to me out of the blue because her friendship is a light in my life <3

You need to read these 3 fics from her RIGHT AWAY (don’t walk, run)

Not in this world (or the next) this is one of those fics that’ll stay with you for a long, long time. Hannah doesn’t just delve into the world of Roswell but creates an entirely different world where Michael has a very different life. Be prepared to fall in love with Alex all over again, and both versions of Michael :)

Not so starcrossed remember how I said Hannah is a poet? Well take a gander at this amazing series where we meet Michael’s home world Antar, and the court poet Baxu, who is basically all of us Alex fans

Shattered apart (damn hopeful heart) this is a lovely study of emotions of both Alex and Michael, in a way that ends hopefully but takes you on a heartrending journey to get there

@beamirang was someone I legit stumbled onto while trying to read every malex fic out in existence. Her fic The Old Astronomer is one of those seminal pieces in fandom that everyone knows and can quote. But she is the queen of character studies and alternative universes, so it wasn’t a stretch to fall in love with everything she wrote. Having finally gathered up the courage to talk to her, she turned out to be just as wonderful a person I had hoped, and a giant goof who loves to torment us with crazy spooky stories :) 

Once you get past the epicness of TOA, take a look at some of these fics from Bea: 

Things the stars knew this is a short but deeply emotional fic that is the thread of continuity of Michael’s emotions I needed. Have a box of tissues ready!

So You’ve Conquered your First Planet is the first in a series of a hilarious au fics where Michael ends up King and Alex is his lionheart. It’s full of fluff, hilarity, and sweet boys who are idiots in forever love <3

Singularity is a twisted take on the pod squad’s alien origins that include Alex. The twists are plenty, and the angst flows freely. But this fic depicts the cosmic connection between Michael and Alex in a way that stays with you. Beware though, here there be monsters.

Roswell Creators Week: AU

When it comes to AUs, Roswell has an embarrassment of riches considering how small the fandom is. While the first season of the show itself was a pretty run of the mill mystery story, fan fic writers got wildly creative, and it’s been a pleasure to discover so many different worlds! I’ve been counting down until AU day so I could recommend a long, long list of amazing fics: 

To Trust Love - @laughsalot3412

(AU where Alex Manes goes on an undercover rescue mission in Caulfield Prison and forms a bond with one of the prisoners in the process.) 

Or, alternatively, Alex gets read into Project Sheppard and immediately decides to commit treason and rescue the aliens, because he actually has a functioning moral compass. And, of course, he and Michael connect. I love this fic because the other has such a deep, nuanced understanding of how abused kids adults behave - how they react to kindness, and to intimacy, and misinterpret others’ intentions, and carry around a whole host of guilt and issues. It’s just so painfully realistic, while at the same time being beautiful and tender and soft.

The drawer springs open, and he gazes upon a twisted piece of material. Michael picks it up, and the material morphs in his hands, taking on a sheen like nothing else on this planet.

Symbols and letters flash across the surface, but he doesn’t bother reading it now - that will come later, when they’re far away from the soon-to-be-empty bank vault.

There’s a low click, and Michael goes still on reflex. “Baby,” he says then, “Is that you?”

“Don’t call me baby,” Alex Manes orders, stepping into the vault. “Hands where I can see them, Guerin.”

An Ocean’s 11/heist/enemies-to-lovers AU that I”m absolutely adoring. None of the Pod Squad are adopted, and instead, they run away when they’re 16 and start stealing spaceship pieces (and, of course, money and gems to cover up what they’re actually taking). And Alex is the one tasked with finding and catching the aliens. Little does he know, though, that he’s been sleeping with one of them for months...

An absolutely beautiful AU where you can explore how things might have been (what would’ve happened if none of the pod sqaud got adopted?) while Michael and Alex still, no matter the circumstances, form a cosmic connection. And it’s got all the sci-fi-y, Air Force/secret facilities/alien dissection elements you wish the show would have. 

Kiss and Control - @winged-fool

Winged-fool is this fandom’s absolute master of darkfic. She’s also written God Called Out Sick Today, which I recommend as well, but this one’s probably my favorite:  

AU where instead of Antarians crashing on Earth, humans escape a dying Earth and are taken in by a war-mongering Antar.

This has everything: space royalty, Antarian general Michael, badass Alex, kinky sex, possessiveness, unorthodox declarations of affection, and, of course, handprints. Alex rises through the ranks and becomes one of the most respected and lethal soldiers in the Antarian military, led by Michael - and, naturally, remarkable as he is, he catches Michael’s eye. Cue two lethal, powerful, badass, murderous men being absolutely smitten with each other. Winged’ fics are always my happy place, because they might be darkfics, but in their own way, they’re sweet, fluffy, and just outright happy. 

What Once was Lost, is Now Found - ChelseasDeadSmile

“I drank wine when the Titanic was sinking, and beer when an amateur filmmaker tricked me into bed. Both times, I had sex before running the fuck away” he tells her with brutal honesty in his voice which seems to cause her to question if he was actually telling her the truth about all he’s been through.

“And now?” she asks trying to pull more out of him and, pleasantly for her, he feels like being honest tonight.

“The curly-haired man at the pool table behind me is looking more and more like a good idea.”

A Hello Again-inspired Malex AU. Alex is immortal. One day, in the 21st century, in a Roswell, a certain curly-haired cowboy catches his eye. 

I’ll keep walking toward the sound of your voice -  vlamito 

It starts some time after he finds the glass shard hidden in the wall – which, of course, he only realizes in hindsight.

It’s not until the night after Caufield, sitting in Michael’s trailer waiting for him to come back so he can make sure he’s alright after what happened in that godforsaken place, that he’s actually able to put all the clues together.

This fic has everything: soulmates, reincarnation, and the multiverse. Touching the spaceship piece makes Michael and Alex see dozens and dozens of alternate realities, in each of which they’ve met and loved each other, one way or another. Which in turn helps them realize something about themselves and their relationship in this particular universe...

Michael Guerin, Space Pirate - @planetsam

A Martian AU that yours truly can brag about having inspired, and let me tell you, it does not disappoint. Michael Guerin makes a perfect Mark Watney, snark and swearing included. 

Darken up my Heaven, Brighten up my Hell - @audreyblanche

So remember when Tyler Blackburn starred as a demon on Charmed and we all lost it? Yeah, so this brilliant fic is based on that. Michael summons a demon because he needs a date to his ex’s wedding. His ex being Noah, and Audrey brilliantly predicted him being a dick weeks before 1x11. He gets slightly more than he bargained for. Anything with that premise could be dark and angsty, but instead, this is light and happy and humorous and absolutely lovely. 

bitch, I’m a monster - @seeaddywrite

Vampire AU! When Alex loses his leg in Iraq, he almost dies - but is saved when he’s turned into a vampire. 

Just like everything seeaddywrite writes, this is beautiful, poignant, heartbreaking, angsty, and, above all, nuanced. As a vampire, Alex believes himself to be a monster; he knows that he has to keep his distance from Michael to keep him safe (what’s new?) A plan that is rather derailed when Michael and Alex wake up alone in the desert, stranded and helpless, courtesy of Jesse mains. And, okay, I love vampire fics; I love the trust and intimacy involved in one partner feeding on the other, and I love the way seeaddy writes Alex, with all of his complicated issues. 

Don’t stay the night - @gra-sonas

Alex has a rule for one night stands: they never stay the night.

Listen, I have a lot of opinions about traumatized characters who never let anyone sleep over/see them while they’re vulnerable/see them naked/any variation on this. And this is just...*chef’s kiss*, and also resonates for me personally for a variety of reasons. It’s just so soft and sweet; Alex is the kind of guy who never lets his guard down, except that with Michael, he does. And Michael, of course, streamrolls right past all of Alex’s defense. Oh, and then there’s the Taylor Swift references, which are a way straight to my heart. 

What Might Have Been - Some-Mad-Lunge

Alex leaves Roswell the day after his and Michael’s almost kiss. He comes back for his high school reunion and realizes some things never change, like the way a certain curly haired boy makes him feel.

Holy shit, you guys. Holy shit. I didn’t think giving Malex Max and Liz’s story (basically - they have an almost kiss and don’t see each other for ten years) would work so well, but it does. Alex becomes famous writing music about his lost love, the one that got away. Little does he know that Michael listens to his music and knows it’s about him. 

I just love everything about this. The Taylor Swift namedropping! Alex getting to be famous and successful doing what he wanted to do! Alex literally writing songs about their “Cosmic Love”! Making out under the bleachers! Alex discovering Michael’s cowboy swagger and sexiness after ten years! Just...everything.

As RNM Creator’s Week winds down, I wanted to give a shout out to some people within this fandom that are incredibly important to me.

@nielrian, my fandom bestie, and the best giver of inspiration I’ve ever had. She has absolutely no qualms about throwing prompts and ideas at me. Memento remains one of my favorite fics in this fandom, because she took a little idea of mine, and wrote the most achingly beautiful fic for it. She’s stuck with me for life now. <3

@audreyblanche for being the amazing person she is, who always just lets me flop into her DMs to check how she’s doing, to chat about whatever, to flail over Camluca (or Malex)... I love and cherish all of our talks no matter the topic. <3

@chasingshhadows... i don’t know where to even start with chasing. I adored her from the moment she started her live watches of RNM, and the meta she was writing, but it was specifically her meta about Michael’s bisexuality that had me barging into her DMs because no one in this fandom (that I saw) had talked about the topic in that way, and i very loudly screamed, YES THIS, at my computer screen - her friendship means the world to me in giving me somewhere to chat and vent and capslock to my hearts content <3

@ubiestcaelum for letting me flail and screech in her DMs over the absolutely incredible stories she writes and just chatting about this silly little show about aliens that has ensnared us; @hannah-writes for being the best cheerleader i could have asked for while writing the Pacific Rim AU (and of course now as i start working more diligently on amnesia!fic); @soberqueerinthewild for DM-ing me first to give me somewhere to flail over Red, White & Royal Blue and then Veronica Mars and giving me ideas for gifsets; @ober-affen-geil for her meta (especially her Max metas, because as she is all too familiar with, Max is not my favorite and I have really struggled to understand him), and for her unending support of how I tend to flail in the tags.

RNM Creators Appreciation Week

So I’ve not been in the right headspace to flail and rec as much as I wanted to, but today, on Cheerleader Appreciation Day, I can’t let this one pass me by. Without cheerleaders, I don’t think I’ve have posted much past my first couple of fics, and I certainly wouldn’t have finished some of the fics I found hard to write, and Not in this World would be nothing but a pipe-dream.

I don’t think those people who spend time cheerleading realise just how important they are. It’s not always telling you that you’re great (which does happen), but it’s helping bounce plot ideas off, boost you when you want to give up, to scream in excitement and help tell people that you’ve posted fic when you’re too shy to do anything more than post it and stick the link on Tumblr.

I’m so grateful for those people I have in my life right now that are fearlessly cheerleading me through everything that I want to do, especially when it comes to fic. They’re kind when I’m having trouble wording, they help unjumble the shite I write sometimes that’s full of spelling mistakes and half-finished thoughts. They bump up my confidence and tell me I’m awesome when I feel anything but. They make me feel less like I’m throwing my stuff into the void.

There are a few I really want to say a special thank you to:

@mandsangelfox: y’all know that she’s my wife, but she’s also a massive cheerleader behind the scenes. She deals with me texting her randomly, or telling her to pause what she’s watching so I can read a section to her to see if it sounds okay. She puts up with me throwing ideas at her until something sticks (and it was her idea to build out my current sci-fi horror Roswell project into something that resembles a choose your own adventure, and when I’m done you’ll all be amazed). She’s an unwavering pillar of patient support, and deals with my nonsense with aplomb.

@insidious-intent: What can I say about you? You’re always so kind and enthusiastic and impromptu beta-services help de-jumblify and sensify my fever-written crap and helps shape it into something better, and also removes some of the Britishisms that sneak in despite my best efforts! You’re a delight to talk to, and genuinely one of the kindest people I’ve ever met. Talking with you is genuinely a highlight of my day, and having you as a sounding board has helped up the angst factor of my stories, past and present (Darkest Before Dawn, I’m looking at you!). Your unwavering support and reassurance is so helpful, and I’m honoured that you let me do the same for you. Even being a small part of your creative process, I’m honoured to be included. You’ve got such a big heart, and I love that you’ve got such a loud voice when I post. I’m 100% sure that most of the people who read Not in this World ended up reading it because you yelled so loudly about it. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. And I am so grateful to have met you.

@beamirang My fellow angst queen! Man, I don’t even have words to describe how much I adore you. Not only your writing - and how you let me cheerlead for you even when all it is is incoherent screaming, emojis and gifs - but who you are as a person. I’ve never told the time in a regular way, but my time is now split into MJ leaving for work, @insidious-intent saying good morning and then 4:30am LA time when you wake up and say hello. I’ve told you this before, but I’m going to say it again, I have learned so much about how to craft stories from reading your work and from talking to you. Your enthusiasm and excitement for the things that I write constantly baffles me as you’re amazing and I’m bowled over every time you tell me that you like what I write/you’re excited. You’ve been such a boost for my confidence in sharing random snippets, you’ve inspired some of my personal favourite fics that I’ve written (including not so starcrossed, as Baxu was 100% your fault and I adore you for it) and being able to scream at you when the muse isn’t working helps immensely. I’m so glad to have messaged you out of the blue a while back, it feels like we’ve been talking forever and that’s something that I treasure. I can’t wait for our DA Fusion to be ready to share so we can cement our places as rulers of Angst.

@lire-casander & @ubiestcaelum - you ladies were the first two people I started talking to in the fandom properly and I’m so very glad I did! Getting to know you both, being able to be part of your creative process and see your wonderous works unfold and being the recipient of your feedback and comments as I post random bits of crap into our chats has helped me refine things that don’t work. You are both so ridiculously kind and talented and I’d not have posted my earlier works without you two in my corner, gently encouraging me on.

@saadiestuff SADIE. WHAT MORE CAN I SAY THAN YOU ARE GOOD PEPPE. The creator of 🐸 [frog emoji, if it doesn’t work]. It’s delightful that we have entire conversations that, to anyone else, might seem like code because we’ve got so many ridiculous jokes between ourselves. And I love that sometimes we don’t even say hello to each other, we just go 🐸🐸🐸 [frog frog frog] because of something we’ve seen each other post or mention on tumblr, or in a discord server. I adore you, girl. So very much. I’m glad we started talking.

@el-gilliath I’m SO GRATEFUL FOR YOU. Though we don’t talk as much as I want us to, the fact that we have so much in common and spend a large chunk of time screaming at each other about what we’re writing really brightens my day. Knowing that you’re on the other end of a message if I’m struggling and you’re ready to listen is such a boon. Knowing that you don’t care if I’m typoing all over the place and am generally a mess makes me feel so safe when we talk, that I don’t have to second guess everything. And knowing that, no matter what it is, you’ll read it and give me an opinion means I genuinely feel that it’s okay to just swing in and ask you for help whenever. And you know the feeling is mutual. I adore you, dude.

There are so many others, too, and I couldn’t possibly list them all though I want to, but the Junkyard folk, @jumbled-nonsense, @nielrian, @soberqueerinthewild... all of you guys who yelled at me during Not in this World and encouraged me to keep writing when all I wanted to do was pack it in. You’re SO VALUED. I’m sure there are people I’ve forgotten, and if I have, please don’t think that doesn’t mean I don’t value you, because I do. So much. Omg.

Finally, finally! I can’t leave out @queersirius. Though I’ve never spoken to you, you have taken on a mammoth task with your rec list. I’ve been on there a few times and each time I’m flabbergasted by the nice things you have to say about what I’ve written. But it’s not only me, you’re a gift to the fandom, a one-stop shop for recs that has proven to be such a good way to discover new fic. I’m always excited to see what new fics you rec, I’d discovered a few new favourites as a direct result of your list. The fact that you take the time to write such detailed, thoughtful commentary and tailor a gif for each fic is mindblowing. Thank you! <3
