lux looks back. whether if it's because the other tripped and lux turned to help or because of a desperately optimistic misjudgement, lux turns because they hoped too much too soon and pays dearly for it.
mallory looks back because he's afraid, automatically expecting the worst or that he's been tricked. he's devastated, and then he's probably on his way to fight a god.
raine makes it out without a word. i don't think they actually believe that their loved one is following them, but they're good with games and playing by the book. trust is a dicey question here, but what they do have is an unflinching resolve.

they look at you, surprised. sitting by the flickering fire, their gaze is gold and filled with light. "what was that for?"
you hum, their hand still captured in your own. "showing my appreciation."
"we are on watch." the corners of their eyes crinkle; their lips curve — is that amusement or embarrassment?
"i can multitask."
"terrible." their words are soft even as they look away, seeking instead some other indistinct target in the darkened woods beyond. "you are too clever for your own good."

MAL :
he startles at your touch, drawing back. a pause, a blink, then a dark, arched brow; he is trying to hold back a laugh.
you feign innocence. he doesn't buy it.
he moves quickly. you feel the press of lips against the corner of your jaw — brief, a ghost of a touch — and sense his crooked smile rather than see it. then, he draws back, but his posture changes; some tension drifts from his stance.
"you're very distracting," he says, settling with his back against yours.
"me? distracting? never." you find his hand again.

LUX :
for a moment, you think they don't notice it. lux does that, sometimes — sits so still that they become a statue silhouetted by moonlight, like something carved out of a dream.
they shift as you draw back, hand encircling your wrist, grasp impossibly gentle. their eyes find yours a moment later, curious and questioning. "everything okay?"
you nod towards the outskirts of the camp. "i thought i heard something," you say quietly. nothing alarming — you can handle your own. you just wanted to let them know.
they rub a restless circle against the back of your knuckles; you don't think they realise. "let me come with you," they say finally. not for protection, just quiet company.

Sometimes you start a day telling yourself you’ll do x and y and you end up drawing a ref sheet for a different character than you intended. Anyway, here’s Raine!

- Enchanted rifle. Vanguard-issued, with custom enchantments. The exact nature of the enchantments are classified information, unfortunately. It doesn’t see much use these days.
- A portable first-aid kit. They use magic where they can, but a regular kit is better than nothing when they’re tapped.
- Sunglasses. Perfectly mundane. They’re just a little sensitive to the sun and aren’t a fan of it.
- Enchanted bracelets, for storing and channeling magical energy. A little chipped and worse for the wear, but perfectly functional.
- Tattoos. Elements of them appear to match magical sigils, though it’s not a design commonly seen nor known. Whether they’re actually functional, and what they do, are questions you’ll have to ask Raine yourself.
Am i surprised that my first full-body ref sheet is of Mallory and his emotional support knife collection? Not at all.

The handwritten notes (and a little more), in case my handwriting is horrific and/or you don’t feel like zooming in:
- Leg prosthesis, enchanted for integration, comfort, and durability. (Functions more like FMA’s automail / magitech than modern real world prosthetics.)
- Standard daggers. Has minor enchantments for hunting monsters.
- Wolf head cane / dagger. Cane handle collapses into dagger hilt. Cane and dagger have similar high-grade enchantments to his leg for durability, with the additional hunting-grade enchantments on the dagger. Wolf head dagger is his main hunting dagger, typically used in conjunction with a standard one in his off-hand.
- Furdinand. A giant mutt that follows Mal everywhere. Loves belly rubs. Some sort of unholy mix between a great pyrenees, a collie, and maybe straight up like. a bear. Is taller than Mal when on his hind legs.
- Protective blade sheath. Prevents Mal from accidentally stabbing someone when he’s just trying to live his daily life and not fight monsters.
- Tattoos. Non-magical. Flowers (top surgery scars). Snake & vines (left shoulder). More flowers (back, not visible in ref).
