Alright, im doing the bullet point thing for this bc thats the easiest way for me to get ideas out, so, im going to throw things at the wall, you guys let me know if it sticks. it will all be under a read more since it got very long

The start of this au doesn't truly start at the eastridge demon getting hit by alex's car, though if i had tried to write it that would be in the first chapter before we do a hard jump back to prior events that lead to it. In truth the first idea that spiraled into that \ came from the idea that alex did not coming forward as a witness to the event of the 6 children going missing.

Overall his reaction was more of a quiet whimper than a loud scream- maybe because of the denial at what in the actual FUCK they just witnessed, but talking about it was not something they could bring themselves to talk about for a very long time, and by the time they could, Alex fully believed that there word was not something that would have been believed because of the timing between the event and when they could properly speak about it without the words dying before they ever reach past their lips.

So Alex doesn't identify themself as knowing anything or was even there. HOWEVER- that does not mean they become a shut in or a recluse, quite the opposite actually.

The guilt of not saying anything plus the sureness of not them being believed even if they did speak up kind of made them there own form of neighborhood watch dog. Does this label them as a town crazy? of course it does, Eastridge county comes across as more of a smaller community to me, and every small town has the wack jobs- Alex just doesn't seem to care that they've been labels into that group.

This causes problems when Lankmann has every police officer on his payroll, but before that point most people just left Alex alone on his little patrols- those of the parents whos kids were grabbed seem to be one of the main supporters of there efforts. it also kick starts the game of cat and mouse they certainly are not the cat. At the same time though they have no idea who or what there catching the trail of even is but is convinced its not good and not friendly (correct assumptions, oh the irony)

By the time of the Halloween PSA's in active circulation for the county, it seems the entire town has willingly gone along with the narrative that Alex cant let go of the past and the numbers on his side boil down to one- themself. least until more attacks start up again and takes out Officer Kruger and Alex has a "THIS IS MY CHANCE" moment and starts patrolling again even if it means they have to resort to looking shady and taking back streets to even get a glimpse at anything that they might come across as sign, since the cops just send them home when ever they do catch Alex snooping around.

and we come back to the initial post about it- its the trying to be not kicked back home that they are driving, headlights off (NOT the weirdest thing someone in a small town has done i assure you) bc its a straight shot dirt road and at that point they'd done it so many times at the dead of night they knew there would be a 0 chance of hitting anyone... until they hit someone. THE Eastridge demon itself kind of someone.

You guys know it from here, after confirming the things not dead just possibly concussed, and also promptly shoving it in the back of there car they take it home, find some (oddly fitting) bright orange moving straps in there garage and bound it (tail included). Then has a moment freak out bc where the fuck are they going to put this thing so it doesn't try to immediately attack on waking up somewhere unfamiliar and tied up? for some reason they choose the basement with a conveniently placed metal support beam (bc why the hell not, might as well take liberties with the house layout to at this point.) At least leaves it a throw pillow so said concussed monster isnt at least laying its head on cold hard concrete.

Has a moment to have (another) moment to freak out but the freak out quickly turns into "IM RIGHT THIS IS THE THING I SAW!" (vindication) and right after is "oh fuck this is the thing i saw" (Horrifying realization).

Someone had had these tags in the first au post but yes Alex does in fact leave an uncrustable, a glass of water, and a sticky note of "sorry i hit you with my car" only its "hey sorry i hit you with my car then tied you up in my basement :(" - yes alex didnt think about the arms and hands being tied up, but its the thought that counts right?

Said demon is not a fan when it does finally wake up. There first 'talk' (if it can even be called that) does NOT end up on a great foot and it had the thing not been concussed and still dizzy alex would of likely just been got the moment they walked back into the basement. so far thats all i really have aside from some other details like Alex never liked the Asylum in general bc of said snooping and talking to the parents of the kids that got taken of what they saw or experienced with the workers there (or at least those willing to share those details) and just genuinely getting a bad vibe, even if its operation under Lankmann senior has been ongoing longer than they've been alive in Eastridge. (<- dipping into HC territory here, it just makes sense to me). So his not accepting employment is two fold of they dont have a reason to come around knocking on there door and just not wanting to get involved with all of that. Did steal a pair of the goggles from a worker who left it on a bench on there smoke break though, so aside from that they try to stay away as much as possible. Most of the other details rn are just tiny things and not overall plot points of whats either changed, or completely made up to make this au have any sort of footing to stand on. I will be making another post if I think of more tho dw xD im not good at ending posts but uhhhhhh yeah thats all for now byeee. if anyone would like to interject some thoughts or ideas i would love to hear them!

so anyway then i wrote it

spin-off universe from nothing lasts, warning for human experimentation, body modification, and paranoia. none of it is described in any detail, but all are factors that affect kakashi shfksjddk

It goes differently. This time, Minato’s no fool, and he orders Kushina to stay home.

It goes differently, this time. Minato’s able to slap a haphazard seal on the inside of the cage, teleport in, grab Kakashi by the collar, hit him hard on the back of the head, and teleport back home.

ROOT agents are already at his door, but he’s already called Hiruzen, knowing the old man can’t do anything about this if he wants to keep his job.

He scolds Danzō in front of Minato and Kushina, appalled at the state of this child. He dismisses the man, promising punishment, and wishes Minato luck with his student. He leaves, even though Minato knows. He knows of Hiruzen’s involvement in Kakashi’s fate.

The ROOT agents leave. Minato finally releases a limp Kakashi, readjusting his grip so he can properly carry his student to a room.

He’s not sure what to expect when he wakes, so he sits on the bed next to him, unsleeping through the night until then.

The first time Kakashi thinks he comes to consciousness, at least a little, is when he’s surrounded by warmth and weight and comfort, something so scarce in recent days. He forces himself back to sleep, opting to preserve the illusion for as long as he can. Because for once, the stench of blood isn’t sending alarms off in his brain to wake up.

The second time he wakes, he’s shooting up because he hears Bird’s voice. Adrenaline shoots through his system so quickly it’s painful, and sweat breaks out from every pore on his body.

Minato’s glad he stayed up because not every/ ROOT agent is gone, apparently. He feels the presence of one seconds before his window is open, and they’re tumbling through into his spare room.

They have a bird mask, missing a chunk out of the bottom left part of it. They’re panting, then point at Kakashi.

“What are you doing with him?”

Minato sees no reason to answer dishonestly, because both Danzō and Hiruzen know well enough what’s happening now. “I’m taking care of him. He’s my student.”

The ROOT agent shakes his head. “That’s my mission. Danzō’s going to kill all of us if he finds out.”

The agent is clearly out of it—mentioning Danzō so freely, still panting, and Minato then realizes he can’t see the skin where the mask is broken because it’s covered in blood.

“Danzō knows. I think it’s best you leave, now,” Minato replies evenly, a hand reaching back slowly to hover over Kakashi’s leg.

The ROOT agent gives him a hard stare. “I can’t leave him. He’s my—my mission.” His last words slur together and just as the bed jolts and Kakashi shoots up behind him, the agent crumples to the floor, unconscious.

Before Minato can react, Kakashi’s tearing out of the bed to crouch next to the agent, ripping through the bag on his hip.

Worried Kakashi might attack, or worse, Minato jumps to his feet and readies a kunai, watching Kakashi’s every move. He’s surprised when the boy retreats with only a small remote in his hand, and then scrambles away from Minato like he’s only noticed his existence.

Kakashi backs himself into the opposite corner of the room, looking around wildly. His eyes land on Minato and a thousand emotions cross his face at once, most notably: shame.

Minato feels his heart clench and he bites his lip to keep from crying right then. He pockets his kunai and relaxes his stance, crouching down to Kakashi’s level. “Hey, it’s okay,” he soothes, smiling gently.

It’s not supposed to be okay. He’s supposed to be in a cell underground, not in this familiar room again.

His sensei’s standing right before him and he has to believe it now, and he hates that it’s real. That he did what he did when escape was just around the corner. That Minato has to see him like this, terrified and covered in blood and grime and—

Crying.

He inhales another soundless sob, then collapses and curls into the corner of the wall, wishing he wasn’t real. That Minato didn’t have to see him like this, that none of this ever happened and he could be normal again.

He’s never cried with his fangs, and he hates how they get in the way, pressing against his lip. He shoves a fist to his mouth, stifling the sobs, and hunches over even further.

A blanket drapes over his form, and hands make it so it covers his neck, too. He’s never been more grateful in his life.

“I’m going to leave for a little bit. I’ll be back in half an hour or so, with Kushina if you’re feeling better,” he says gently, voice soothing. He doesn’t wait for Kakashi’s response before he’s picking up Bird and leaving, the room blissfully silent again.

Minato moves the ROOT agent to the bathroom since he’s out of spare rooms and sure as hell isn’t putting him in his own. He unmasks him only to clean his wound, without any real good reason. It’s stopped bleeding and he owes the kid nothing.

And that’s another thing—the agent is probably only a few years older than Kakashi, which strikes a chord in Minato’s heart yet again. Something about a jonin promotion at the age of ten, he thinks.

Once that’s finished, he re-masks the ROOT agent and waits.

It doesn’t take long for him to wake, flaring out his chakra to check the area, subtle enough that Minato almost doesn’t notice.

Almost.

“I’ve got some explaining to do, I think,” he says, and the agent sits up slowly.

“Are you going to make me deliver a message to Danzō? Because chances are I’ll be dead before I can relay it.” The agent’s voice is tired, but young. Familiar in the way of sending children to war.

Minato shakes his head, both to clear the thought and dismiss the question. “Kakashi is my student. I’ve taken him from Danzō and both him and the Hokage understand the circumstances. So, your mission is over.”

The kid rolls the idea around in his mind for a few moments, and his grip tightens on the toilet lid below him. All Minato can think with a sigh is, Am I really going to help another messed up kid?

Minato tries to leave the agent in the bathroom to check on Kakashi, but he insists on coming along; something about knowing Hound better than he did. Minato bristled, but allowed it.

Kakashi had since moved to sit facing the room, still huddled in his blanket. He lifts it to cover the lower half of his face when Minato walks in, and Minato lets him.

“I’ll buy you some new clothes tomorrow,” he says, sitting on the floor while the ROOT agent stands awkwardly near the door. “Do you want to take a bath?”

Kakashi stills, seems to check in on himself, and nods. Minato nods as well. “I’ll get a shower started for you first. Are you feeling better? Can Kushina come look at your collar?”

Kakashi pauses, then his eye flick over to the ROOT agent. Minato follows his gaze to where his hand is hovering over the bag on his hip, and then back to Kakashi, who’s holding the small remote in his hand.

“Took it,” Kakashi says, almost triumphantly and tucks his hand under the blanket. The agent nods stiffly.

Minato grimaces. “Kakashi?” he redirects, and the boy looks at him expectantly. The silence lingers for a moment, and Minato blinks. “Kushina?” he prompts. “Will you let her look at the seal on your collar?”

Kakashi averts his gaze, looking at the baseboard next to him, then nods. Minato smiles, if not fully. “Great. Thank you, I’ll go get her now.”

He leaves, brushing past the agent as he goes to find his girlfriend downstairs, and pretends not to notice the new lapse in memory that his student is clearly suffering.

Kakashi stares at Bird, who stares right back. He doesn’t have much to say, except, “Are you staying?” His words are stilted and uncomfortable in his mouth—he hates it.

Bird shrugs. “I haven’t been offered. I’ll probably have to leave after this.” He looks down. “I’m sorry about the whole collar thing, by the way.” He looks like he wants to say more, but can’t get it out. Kakashi shrugs.

“You did what you were…told,” Kakashi says, simplifying the vocabulary to avoid the uncomfortable lisp of assigned. “I under—understand.” He shakes his head at the sound of the word, wiping his mouth.

Bird nodded, barely perceptible, and the door opens again. Kushina comes in, visibly restraining herself from running at Kakashi and burying him in a hug.

She kneels down in front of him and presses a hand to his forehead, eyes welling up with tears. “Hey, kiddo. I’m gonna need you to turn around, okay?”

Kakashi nods and scoots around, Kushina’s hand on his forehead the entire time. He tugs the blanket around to cover his shoulders instead, letting his head drop into the corner of the wall.

Kushina’s hand trails from his forehead to his neck, keeping constant contact. He appreciates it, even if he jerks when another hand joins the first. He instinctively tries to look back and see, see if somebody joined without his knowledge, but she pressed his head back down gently. “It’s just me,” she soothes, voice barely a whisper. “Just me.”

Kakashi relaxes, trusting her voice, and she gets to work.

It’s maybe ten minutes of anxious waiting, and he can feel presences behind him, looming. The hair on his neck prickles uncomfortably and when the lock comes undone and the collar is removed, he spins back around quickly to catch whoever was watching in the act. But when he faces the room again, Minato is sitting on the bed and Bird is still standing at the door. It’s only Kushina.

He swallows uncomfortably and moves the blanket back up to cover his face.

“All done,” Kushina breathes with relief, handing it to Minato. Kakashi taps her with the remote and she hands that over as well.

“Can I hug you?” Kushina asks, obviously itching for it, and Kakashi shrugs in relent and nods. She grins and grabs him from the corner of the room, pulling him into her lap. Immediately, Kakashi feels the unknowing tension bleed out of his muscles and he breathes in deep. She smells overwhelmingly like home and safety and the river next to his house, and his eyes flutter shut as he nuzzles closer.

This is real and he thinks maybe it’s okay if it’s like this.

Kushina turns slowly to look at Minato, the brightest grin he’d ever seen splitting her face. He chuckles quietly when he realizes it’s because Kakashi’s fallen asleep, or is at least dozing in her arms.

“Oh, I’m never letting him go,” she breathes, adjusting her grip so she’s cradling his head close.

“How’d you do that?” the ROOT agent asks suddenly, peering close.

“What, hug him?” Minato asks, somewhat amused. Surely this kid knew what a hug was, right?

“No, make him still. He never does that. He always—“ He cuts off, seeming to realize that whatever he was going to say wouldn’t fare well with the two adults in the room. Unfortunately, Minato is keen to find out anything he can about Kakashi’s imprisonment.

“Say it,” Minato says, a sharp order. The ROOT agent swallows. “He was never calm like that,” he says slowly, looking back at Kakashi. “Always loud and angry, even when he was sleeping. The only way we could make him quiet was by…well…”

The shock collar. Right.

Minato weighs the thing in his hand, studying it briefly. “I guess I wouldn’t peg Danzō as the type to try affection to get someone to calm down first,” he says wryly. “Thanks for telling.”

The agent nods stiffly and Minato sighs. “Will you go back to Danzō?”

The question seems to catch the agent off-guard. “Uh—no, I don’t think I can. I failed two missions in one day, and—“ Well, it doesn’t really need to be said.

“Would you like to stay with us? At least for a little bit?” Minato asks. It’s primarily to wean information from the agent, which he seems to know based on his studying stare, but a little is because, well. He’s just a kid.

“I wouldn’t mind,” the agent relents, looking back at Kakashi safely curled in Kushina’s arms. “I could maybe help him get better, too.”

If we let you near him, Minato thinks, nodding. “Okay, great. You’ll take this room and Kakashi will sleep with us.”

The agent nods. and Kushina stands. “I’ll take him to my room now,” she hums, leaving the two of them alone.

“Don’t try anything,” Minato says, standing up as well. “I’m only letting you stay because I have no reason to fear Danzō or what he can do to me, yet. If I find out you’re still loyal to him, I will kill you.”

The agent nods and steps aside for Minato to get through. As the blonde opens the door, he asks, “By the way, what’s your name?“

“Bird,” Bird answered, and Minato smiled.

“Good to know,” he said, closing the door.
