“Some people, when they have taken too much and have been driven beyond the point of endurance, simply crumple and give up. There are others, though they are not many, who will for some reason always be unconquerable. You meet them in time of war and time of peace. They have an indomitable spirit and nothing, neither pain nor torture nor threat of death, will cause them to give up.”

Weekend Top Ten #245
Top Ten Actors Who Could Play Willy Wonka
So apparently they’re making a new Willy Wonka movie. I’m fine with that. The 1970s version is very fondly remembered, but not – in my humble opinion – the best possible adaptation of the material, despite Gene Wilder’s sublime turn. And Tim Burton’s version was stylistically interesting but added unnecessary backstory (and I was not keen on Depp’s portrayal of Wonka, either). So, yeah, make a new one. That’s fine. Shoot it back-to-back with Glass Elevator if you want.
But wait, what’s this?! It’s not actually a new adaptation. It’s sort of a prequel. Sort of an origin story. Okay, fine, I’ll go with that.
So anyway, as is common for these things, I’m going to indulge in some fantasy casting, and think of ten actors that I think would be great as Wonka. What am I looking for? Well, in my opinion anyway, a certain degree of tall-and-skinny-ness is appreciated, although I can be flexible; certainly, they need some acting chops, and I kinda think singing-and-dancing chops too, if possible; they need to be funny, but also potentially a bit sinister; and just have that twinkle that makes you like ‘em. They don’t even have to be British, as – so far – the definitive screen Wonka is not. So it can be done, clearly.
Right, here we go then. Wonk this way…
