EXPLORING THE 1966 ROARING RIVER UFO ENCOUNTER LOCATION - While traveling Missouri's rural roads last April, we stopped off to explore the Roaring River State Park near Cassville, Missouri. It was at one of this park's Northern campsites (we were able locate the encounter area) where - on November 22, 1966 at 8 p.m. - a group of deer hunters reportedly had a famous frightening encounter with a dangerous UFO. According to accounts, the men returned to their camp to find it mysteriously smoking and in flames. Within seconds, a "silvery flying saucer" was then seen to rise from the nearby valley - the object being photographed by one of the men before zipping off (and allegedly chased by jets). This case was investigated by esteemed UFO researchers Ted Phillips and Dr. J. Allen Hynek, who worked as a team on this early collaborative effort: Hynek interviewed witnesses and Phillips gathered site data. This was one of the few reported cases where a group sighting had accompanying physical and photographic evidence. It was from this case that Hynek encouraged Phillips to specialize in investigating trace evidence cases in the field - which he did more than a thousand times following Roaring River. The landmark Roaring River Encounter still remains unsolved and unexplained. Roaring River is not far from another famous UFO incident location that took place in Cato, Missouri in 1978.
