Exodus - Burn, Hollywood, Burn
Wednesday, January 13: Generation Kill, “Friendly Fire”
Generation Kill began as a thematically focused side project for Rob Dukes while he was still fronting Exodus, but became his primary focus once he was unceremoniously booted from the legendary thrash act. Still, both of Generation Kill’s records were pretty closely aligned to Exodus’ fundamental approach, if perhaps a little punkier in nature. “Friendly Fire” was a short and fierce thrash attack powered by Dukes’ snarl and sizzling guitars. The punk and crossover influences were clearly present but didn’t overwhelm, making this sound like more than just another thrash throwback, and Dukes had grown enough as a frontman and vocalist to give the tune its own personality. It ultimately wasn’t enough to gain Generation Kill enough traction to continue, but for ‘10s thrash “Friendly Fire” had its qualities.
