Took a bit, but here's the newest chapter.
“This is how they introduce CBDC. It's a genius strategy. "Groceries and other goods are too expensive using cash, but the CBDC price is X amount less!" They will have people begging for CBDC if Kamala wins, it will be touted as "a great economic win!" and we will put every future generation in debt slavery because we couldn't wake up when communism was at our doorstep. It's remarkably evil.” - Rob Gray

The Inaugural Definitive NCAA Tournament Cojones Factor Power Rankings
Years ago, playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Sam Cassell hit a clutch shot to seal the win for the Minnesota Timberwolves. He proceeded to pretend to grab his crotch in epic proportions, spawning a tradition that has been continued from the likes of Marco Belinelli and Eddie House, among others. Not everyone has the balls to hit big shots like this, and this could not be more prominent in the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Tournament is littered with big shots and buzzer beaters, and was the case this year. Inspired by Cassell, while no one grabbed their junk, many big shots were made. Someone had to rank them, so here I am, going through which shots, which plays, which moments were the most worthy of someone grabbing their family jewels to celebrate. Here are, the Definitive 2018 NCAA Tournament Cojones Factor (coined by ESPN’s Tim MacMahon) Power Rankings.
The Best Performance Region
1. Rob Gray SG HOU vs San Diego State
This region is all about putting your team on your back. And, while there were many great performances during the tournament, none were bigger and more important to a team’s victory than Rob Gray in the opening round against the Aztecs of San Diego State. Check these numbers: 39 points (on 12-25 FGs) and 8 rebounds. Not only that, but he ended up hitting not one, but 2 potential game winning shots, with this being the clincher. This is what the Cojones Factor is all about, and Rob Gray earned the top spot in the best performance region.
2. Malik Newman SG KU vs Duke
Hard to top this. Not only did Newman score all of Kansas’ 13 points in overtime, he knocked out the evil empire Duke Blue Devils in the process, throwing this dagger in their hearts like Brick Tamland throws a trident. Doing all that while dropping 32 points (on 8-19 FGs) to earn a trip to the Final 4? Yeah, that gets you the 2nd spot on this illustrious list.
3. Donte DiVincenzo SG NOVA vs Michigan
Yes, the Michael Jordan of Delaware, otherwise known as Donte DiVincenzo, exploded in the National Championship game, off the bench no less, to the tune of 31 points (on 10-15 FGs), 5 rebounds and 3 assists with good defense along the way. Doing it on the biggest stage would normally net the top spot on any list, but he did so in a game that was mostly not close. However, he was the one who broke the floodgates for Nova and got their offense rolling at a time where they were trailing and Michigan had done a good job throwing Villanova off their rhythm. Later, he hit this shot to essentially end it for the Wolverines. Had this game been closer, Donte would have easily been number 1. He’ll have to settle for a measly National Championship though. I’m sure he’ll take that.
The Ray Allen Region
Back in 2013 in the NBA Finals, Ray Allen hit what may be known as the greatest shot in NBA history. This shot inspired this next region: shots that were not created by the one who took the shot, but shots specified for the one who took the shot to drain the shot.
1. Jordan Poole PG MICH vs Houston
This might have been the only lock. I mean, Jordan Poole’s shot had everything. It was improbable, contested, required missed free throws and was the very last play of the game. It was a pure Hail Mary, and the Lord answered Michigan’s prayer.
2. PJ Savoy SG FSU vs Xavier
Florida State never led in the 2nd half against Xavier until about a minute left in the game. PJ Savoy went on to hit a transition 3 down two points that was heavily contested, yet splashed right in the face of Xavier’s defender. Not only that, but he went on to hit 2 free throws afterwards to make it a 3 point game, where Xavier chucked up a shot that was an airball, sealing the victory for the Seminoles.
3. Dakota Mathias SF Purdue vs Butler
Playing without their mountain of a Center in Isaac Haas, Purdue got a tough fight from Butler. That wasn’t until Purdue drew up a hellacious play for Dakota Mathias to hit the game clinching shot. I guess you could see Dakota Mathias snuck up on Butler on this play….
The Kyrie Irving Region
Ok you have to be living under a rock if you don’t know about Kyrie’s shot in Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals. Anyway, this region is for guys who don’t need someone else to get them a shot damnit; this region is for guys who do it themselves.
1. Barry Brown Jr. PG Kansas State vs Kentucky
The game was a struggle. Kansas State played a grinder type of game against Kentucky, without their best player in Dean Wade AKA The Deceptive Flash. Regardless, the game was tied with less than a minute to go. They needed a bucket and Barry Brown Jr. got them one, blowing by a future lottery pick in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and finishing over another potential NBA draft pick in PJ Washington to get Kansas State to the Elite 8.
2. Zach Norvell Jr. SF Gonzaga vs UNC-Greensboro
Gonzaga was up basically all game, yet the mighty Spartans of Greensboro, North Carolina were mounting a comeback. They even took a 2 point lead with less than 2 minutes remaining. Then, Zach Norvell rose up and ended their run, draining a 3 right in the face of a UNCG defender, lifting Gonzaga to the 2nd round. Were this on a bigger stage, Norvell would be ahead on this list, but the shot is pretty damn clutch regardless of the setting.
3. Tyus Battle SG Syracuse vs Michigan State (8/10)
This shot is further down solely because this game set College Basketball back 20 years with how bad and sloppy it was. However, no matter how pretty or ugly a game might be, a shot to lift a team to a 3 point lead with less than a minute left will always be impressive, let alone a step back contested jumper like the one Tyus Battle hit against Michigan State.
The Loyola Chicago Region
I’m not sure you guys heard, but Loyola Chicago made the Final 4. I wrote about them more in depth here, but to get to the Final 4, they made some incredibly cojones-worthy shots that by the grace of God, fell.
1. Clayton Custer vs Tennessee
This shot gets the top spot because it is what the Cojones Factor is all about. Down 1 with a defender all over you in an iso situation, everything on the line hinges on 1 shot. 1 possession. To quote Eminem, “will you catch it (the moment) or let it slip?” Clayton Custer didn’t let it slip, getting a shooter’s bounce to lift Loyola into the Sweet 16.
2. Donte Ingram vs Miami
Ok the iso stuff is great, but sometimes, a miracle is all you need. After a future lottery pick in Lonnie Walker IV missed a free throw, Loyola had to rush to get a shot off to win with less than 10 seconds to go. On a broken play, Donte Ingram got the ball and heaved up a prayer…. Splash.
3. Marques Townes vs Nevada
This is the less stressful of the 3 big Loyola Chicago shots, but just as important nonetheless. Instead of being down 1 point, Loyola was up 1 point needing 1 more shot to put a pesky Nevada team away. They cut off a Custer drive and ran Marques Townes off the 3 point line. Townes needed to make a play and took a page from his former high school teammate’s book (some guy named Karl-Anthony Towns). Step back 3? Game. Blouses.
The Arike Ogunbowale Region
To paraphrase Jay-Z, what’s better than one buzzer beater? …..
Two.
(Also, shoutout the women’s game for delivering an unbelievable Final 4. The notion that UCONN is bad for the women’s game was always dumb, and now is incredibly dumb. UConn’s dominance forced other teams to step their game up. Now? The gap is as close as it has ever been. Congrats to Notre Dame for this year’s championship.)
The Best Moment Region
1. Svi Mykhailiuk SF/PF Kansas vs Duke
The biggest shot in the best game of this year’s tournament. Down 3, Kansas was down to their last hope, until Svi Mykhailiuk took a pass from Devonte’ Graham and drained this 3 to keep the Jayhawks alive. He sent the game into overtime, where, as we covered earlier, Malik Newman went bonkers and sent Duke packing.
2. Jairus Lyles SG UMBC vs Virginia
Ok, this was cheating a little bit in that this clip was a game winner from UMBC’s conference title game. However, they did become the first 16 seed to ever beat a 1 seed. Because this clip wasn’t in the NCAA Tournament is why the beloved Retrievers are number 2 on this list. But, make no mistake, the one lasting memory of this tournament that everyone will remember will be UMBC stomping all over Virginia. And to think, none of that may have been possible had this shot not fallen.
3. Josh Hall SG Nevada vs Cincinnati
Caleb Martin? No. Cody Martin? Nah. Jordan Caroline? Nope. So, who was the one to seal the deal for Nevada’s 22 point comeback against Cincinnati in the last 11:34 of the second half (yes, that really happened. College basketball!)? Josh Hall! Yes, Josh Hall got an offensive rebound and flipped the ball in to finally get Nevada the lead. Forget holding for the last shot and giving the ball to your best player. Josh Hall gives zero, and Nevada needed him to move on to the Sweet 16.
So, that wraps up the Cojones Factor Power Rankings for next season. Hopefully next year’s tournaments will give off even more memorable shots.
Honorable Mentions:
E.C. Matthews SG Rhode Island, C.J. Burks SG Marshall, Caleb Martin SF Nevada, Caleb Martin again, Keenan Evans PG TTU, Duncan Robinson PF MICH, Moritz Wagner and Charles Matthews MICH
