Your next release takes a while and … yes. Yes, what? I think one does ask oneself how does an outfit feel after something like Wildflower. I mean, The Avalanches' follow-up to their debut became something of a legend, though they did make their own album in the end. Sure, some felt they should've risked more, yet then again their modus operandi remains an incredibly open playing field. Their embrace of nostalgia with all the nasty side effects of the latter intoxicates us again, forming a melange one cannot shake off. However, I do believe they needed Wildflower to liberate themselves, since their current last album stays as a pinnacle of their opus, but this is a debate for a time, when we shall discuss that one.

While some musicians' early works don't guide us to their consequent soundscapes, which gave them fame, they can provide us with the energy that made them. The Avalanches' El Producto might be a great case of that, since the EP doesn't contain their usual shenanigans. True, they heavily sample a variety of sources, yet they also rap on the disc. Yes, they were a version of The Beastie Boys at that point, but you can slot this platter next to Since I Left You and Wildflower without batting an eye about the record being the work of the same collective. You can still locate their wild abandon on El Producto, they merely positioned that quality in a way that seems different from their later successes, though you can hear the traces of them.
