Although his career in the US Navy hadn’t so far reflected it, Crippen had a passion for the sea, devouring books which brought to life the golden age of sail and the square-rigged naval battles of the early nineteenth century. When time allowed, C. S. Forester’s Hornblower novels had offered a welcome break from the cactus and dust of the high desert at Edwards.

It was 20 years to the day from cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s historic Vostok 1 fight to become the first human in space. The flight orbited Earth 36 times & touched down 54.5 hours after liftoff. It was the 1st American crewed flight since Apollo-Soyuz in 1975. Mr. Crippen would go on to command 3 further Space Shuttle missions & Mr. Young one additional flight, bringing his total of spaceflights to an amazing 6.

There’s a first time for everything! Commander John Young & pilot Robert Crippen prepare for the 1st Space Shuttle flight (STS-1), May 1979. The pair flew Columbia on April 12, 1981; 20 years to the day after Yuri Gagarin lifted off to become the 1st human in space! The pair orbited Earth 36 times over 54.5 hours. It was the 1st crewed flight by NASA since the Apollo Soyuz Test Project 6 years prior. STS-1 was also the only maiden flight by NASA to carry a crew although atmospheric testing was done previously with the Shuttle orbiter.
