Paul remembers being 13 and watching his brother, no longer new, stand awkwardly off to the side of the birthday party. Everyone present knew Daniel had been invited because he was Paul's brother, and not because he was actually wanted. Daniel wasnt even a bad guy! ...Generally. (He had only stormed out of class once.)

Paul chugs the punch for good luck and searches for a trash can. By the time he's back, Daniel is awkwardly smiling at Tim. Thank God for Tim. The conversation is obviously one-sided, but both sets of shoulders are relaxed, there's no white knuckles tensed around cups or silverware, and Daniel is smiling.

Tim bounces off to harass someone else, and Paul slips over to stand by Daniel.

His smile disappears. Because of course it does. That's all it ever does around him.

"I'm glad you were able to come," Paul says anyway.

Daniel nods. The music plays over the speakers. Gifts have been opened, food has been eaten, and a game of sharks and minnows seems to be formulating on the lawn.

"Do you... want to go play?" Paul asks.

Daniel eyes the mob and then looks at Paul. "I don't think that's safe."

Paul thinks of Daniel's aversions to being hit, or touched really, and his mouth twists. Daniel stops looking at Paul and starts looking at the speakers.

"Do you like the music?" Paul asks.

"Not really," Daniel says.

"Oh."

Tim runs over to Paul. "Are you playing?"

Paul looks at Daniel. Daniel looks at them, then turns and walks to go back inside. Paul looks at Tim.

"Give him some space," Tim advises, "it's loud."

Right.

"I'll play," Paul promises, but his guilt makes the cake and ice cream churn in his stomach.

"Dance with me!" Gabriel commands. He holds up his hands and Paul bends down to take them. The two do a little twist, and Gabe demands a spin. Paul walks him through it, and even does a little move of his own when Gabriel holds out his arm for Paul to spin out. They do solos, they do twists, they do Simon Says. Paul is panting and exhausted by the time the song ends, but Gabriel is satisfied.

"Mind if I cut in?" Rebekah asks Gabriel seriously.

Gabe ponders this, then nods. "You have to spin him," Gabe says.

"I promise," Rebekah says. She and Gabe shake on it, then she stands and winces as her knees pop.

"My lady," Paul says as he takes her hand.

"My sir," Rebekah replies. "I've been given a very serious task, you know."

Paul rests a hand on her waist and takes her hand in his. "What lays heavy on your heart, my lady?"

"This is not a good position for spinning," she says gravely. She twirls out from under him, then holds one hand above her head. She's smirking as he ducks under her arm. Paul looks at Gabriel for approval; he nods, and wanders off.

"There's something else you owe me," Rebekah whispers as they fall back together.

"Hm?" Paul manages to ask as their lips brush.

Rebekah steals a kiss, he steals the next, and it's the sensation of tears on his lips that wakes him up.
