Mudgee’s shining beacon from 2020

The 2020 vintage in Mudgee was possibly the most challenging in the region’s wine growing history. While many winemakers did not produce wine, there was one shining light, the 2020 Robert Stein ‘White Label’ Riesling.

Third generation winemaker Jacob Stein said, “We wanted to test ourselves and to pursue a 2020 vintage. As Riesling is our flagship variety, we wanted to keep it alive, along with ensuring our small family business survived and our wonderful staff remained employed.

“It was unthinkable to go 12 months without making wine, particularly a Riesling.”

The location of the Stein vineyards was the main saviour during the horrendous summer. “Our vineyards are located around 90km from the fires, with the smoke drifting into the valley from the South East. We’re located further up the valley, at an elevation of around 600 metres, with the hills at our back. This funnelled the smoke away from the vineyard, ensuring the smoke didn’t settle over us.”

The Riesling was handpicked followed by very conservative, pristine winemaking. “There was less lees work than previous vintages with the goal to make a fruit driven, fresh style.

“We initially described the grapes as declassified ‘Dry Riesling’, however we are extremely happy with the wine and are more than happy to present it as a Robert Stein wine,” continued Jacob.

“The fruit was handpicked after being tested multiple times for taint. It was analytically tested by the AWRI as unfinished and finished wine along with being presented to a number of tasting panels. No smoke taint was evident.

“We are grateful to have been in a position to make wine from the 2020 vintage when so many of our colleagues and neighbours didn’t. This has allowed us to retain all of our staff who continue to inspire and support the business during the ongoing challenges.”

Robert Stein winery made a number of red and white wines from the 2020 vintage but look forward to vintage 2021, with the fruit looking exceptional in a very favourable season to date.

Robert Stein Wines continues to shine with release of 2019 Rieslings

Winemaker Jacob Stein is commemorating his tenth vintage back at his family’s winery with the release of his acclaimed 2019 Robert Stein Dry Riesling and 2019 Robert Stein Half-Dry Riesling; both having garnered an impressive tally of medals.

“We have had a fantastic run with our Rieslings” said winemaker Jacob Stein. “The 2019 vintage has been the most awarded in the year of its release which is encouraging for the future. We have seen the wines continue to improve with a few years in the bottle.”

The Robert Stein Dry Riesling is one of the region’s flagship wines, with the 2016 vintage awarded the Trophy for the Best Riesling at the 2019 Sydney Royal Wine Show.

“I’ve been back in Mudgee for the last ten years and it’s been an extremely rewarding time.  I’ve been very fortunate to have the opportunity to implement my winemaking philosophy and to manage the family vineyard with this view. It’s certainly been a lot of hard work but it’s evident in the level of wines we are producing.”

“Our vineyard management has also had a major shift with a renewed focus on soil health and vine nutrition.  The winery has undergone two extensions and many upgrades, all with a view to increase the quality of the wines we are making for ourselves and for others.”

“We have built great relationships with a number of Mudgee Riesling growers and thus have an increasing number of components from which to choose, allowing for more blending options and complexity in the finished wines.”

Jacob’s inherent connection to Riesling is Australia’s longest.  It started with his ancestor Johann Stein, a ‘vine dresser’ who was employed by the Macarthur family to bring Riesling vines to Australia in 1838. The family then planted vines at Sydney’s Prospect Creek during the 1880s which succumbed to phylloxera. Jumping forward to 1976, Jacob’s grandfather, Robert Stein reignited the family history by planting vines in Mudgee.

Possibly one of Mudgee’s busiest winemakers, Jacob Stein is just getting started. “We have some exciting plans for the future” said Jacob, “Mudgee is still one of Australia’s unsung Riesling regions.   However, with a growing collection of awards, such as the trophy in Sydney, I’m hopeful we are starting to change perceptions.”

Jacob and the Robert Stein Winery experienced an incredibly successful 2019 Mudgee Wine Show, winning eight trophies, plus an additional four trophies awarded to wines they produce for the Mudgee region.

Two great vintages showcase the best of Mudgee

Mudgee’s highly acclaimed Robert Stein Wines has released two new vintage Reserve wines, the 2014 Robert Stein Reserve Shiraz ($50) and its white companion, the 2017 Robert Stein Reserve Chardonnay ($40).

The Robert Stein Reserve wines are limited release parcels from the winery’s best vineyards. “Both the Reserve Shiraz and Reserve Chardonnay are made from grapes grown on our oldest vines, planted in 1976 when my Grandfather established the vineyard,” explained winemaker Jacob Stein.

Jacob has recently completed his 10th vintage in his family’s winery. He returned to Mudgee in 2009 after spending numerous vintages working in Australia and overseas in order to gain valuable winemaking experience; always with the objective of bringing this expertise home to Mudgee.

The 2014 Robert Stein Reserve Shiraz is from one of Mudgee’s great vintages. The perfectly ripened grapes were hand-picked and fermented in small, open fermenters with gentle hand plunging several times daily. The wine was then matured in a combination of new (30 per cent) and seasoned French and American hogsheads for 15 months.

“This is a classic single vineyard Shiraz,” said Jacob, “It’s a wine made to reflect and express these 40 year old Shiraz vines; a wine that showcases the finest flavours and characteristics of our region.”

One of Mudgee’s regional heroes is Chardonnay. The region was the first to bottle and label wine under its correct varietal name, Chardonnay. “We have a rich history with Chardonnay and a vintage like 2017 only helped to show why the variety can do so well here.  We are aiming to make a varietal wine with regional citrus and stone fruit flavours, a complex palate and good natural acidity and length.”

The Robert Stein Reserve Chardonnay was picked by hand, whole bunch pressed straight to barrel (50 per cent new, 50 per cent older, French hogsheads) and allowed to ferment with natural, wild yeast. Further complexity and texture was gained through partial malolatic fermentation, with maturation on lees for 10 months. “We recommend allowing this chardonnay a few hours to fully open up.”

The Robert Stein Reserve Chardonnay and Shiraz join their counterpart in the Robert Stein stable, the acclaimed Reserve Riesling.

Introducing Robert Stein’s new Farm Series

Mudgee’s most awarded winemaker, Jacob Stein, has released a new range of Robert Stein wines; wines designed with a touch of fun and quirkiness in mind. The new ‘Farm Series’ wines offer exceptional value and include the 2018 Robert Stein ‘Farm Series’ Riesling, 2018 Robert Stein ‘Farm Series’ Roséand 2018 Robert Stein ‘FarmSeries’ Semillon Riesling Gewürztraminer.

The new wines were inspired by the Stein family’s farm that surrounds the vineyard and winery. “The farm is my break from the winery. It’s a bit of a hobby that ensures my sanity, especially around vintage and bottling time,” quipped winemaker Jacob Stein.

“We breed a range of animals on the farm. From our free-range Berkshire pigs, Angus cattle, Dorper sheep to the ISA Brown chooks, it’s quite a menagerie and a real passion for me.”

Much of the produce from the farm is used in the winery’s restaurant, Pipeclay Pumphouse, which overlooks the vineyard, as well as for the Pipeclay Produce small goods.

“These new wines are from the near perfect 2018 vintage; a cold, dry winter followed by a relatively dry summer with lovely ripening conditions. While the crop levels were down we were still in a good position to make these new wines.”

The new Robert Stein ‘Farm Series’ Rosé is made from early harvested merlot and shiraz. The juice was left on skins for only an hour in the press to create a soft garnet pink colour and light tannins. The slow ferment was cool in order to preserve the fruit freshness, with four months on lees adding extra flavour, complexity and texture.

The Farm Series white blend follows a long tradition for Robert Stein Wines. Blended from semillon (58%), riesling (25%) and gewürztraminer (17%) it is a unique wine that, with the addition of gewürztraminer, has been made at the winery for 40 years.  “We fermented the grapes on skins for seven days then pressed it off to finish fermenting on heavy lees,” explained Jacob. “We wanted to add texture and mouth-feel to this fresh style.”

Riesling continues to be a flagship wine for Robert Stein Wines. “We have access to some of the best parcels of riesling in the region. This allows us to make our Reserve Riesling right through to using some younger vineyard blocks in this new wine.

“We have kept the winemaking simple in order to showcase the region and variety; crushing and pressing extraction to extract the variety’s best expression and fruit character, with a long cool ferment that respects the riesling flavour.”
