Robert isn’t entirely sure how he ended up in this exact situation, with Mack’s tongue down his throat and Charity watching, but his life has been admittedly quite weird since he got out of prison, so he’s kind of at the, ‘this might as well happen’, stage of things.

It starts like this.

Robert starts working at Butlers Farm, and he surprises himself with how much he starts to enjoy the work. He’d spent most of his childhood dreaming of his escape from the farm, hating having to work with his hands, dreaming of a life where he sat behind a posh desk, sent emails, and told other people what to do. Maybe being in prison for six years really had rewired his brain, because now, there was something peaceful about working the land, about being outdoors after years spent locked behind prison walls – for a minute, standing there, hands on hips, Robert almost understood his father, understood his love of farming, but he’d quickly shaken off that understanding, never one to give Jack Sugden too much credit.

It was on the farm that Robert started to strike up conversation with Mack. He knew of the other man, knew he was Moira’s brother, but not much else. It started as work chat, mostly, discussions about what needed doing on the farm, until one day, Mack had inclined his head slightly, looked at Robert, and declared he also thought John was unbearably weird, and they should talk about it more.

Maybe it wasn’t the healthiest start to a friendship, bonding over your shared dislike of your half-brother, but Mack’s blatant hatred of the other man brought Robert a lot of joy, okay, and his post-prison life hadn’t exactly been swimming in joy and whimsy, so he wasn’t going to deny himself what little was offered. Robert had rarely ever denied himself anything in life, and prison hadn’t changed that.

Look, what can I say? I read @vckaarob 's fic (sorry for tagging you out of the blue!) and then every other fic there is, which is not nearly enough, so of course I had to write one myself.

Robert knows he fucked up. What else is new.

The thing is, Mack was unexpected.

Robert really hasn’t planned on making many friends, and especially note Aaron’s best mate.

But then Mack was like “You’re right, John is so weird”, and what is Robert to do? Not talk to him?

He was half convinced at that point that his dislike of John was just his jealousy after all, so having someone confirm what a massive creep John is is such a relief.

Of course everyone else thinks they’re mental, but that doesn’t matter.

It goes from there, working together at the farm, having pints at the pub, nights on the couch watching football they’re both not interested in, and talking, lots of talking.

Robert likes Mack. He’s fun and confident and cheeky. He’s also really fucking attractive, Robert has eyes, thank you very much. That accent doesn’t hurt either.

But he’s the first friend he’s made in a long time, so he tries very hard to not let his thoughts go there.

Then Mack’s divorce comes through, and officially he’s staying at Moira’s, but just as many nights, if not more, he’s at the little place Robert has gotten himself.

Robert cooks him dinner and they sleep curled up on his small bed. It really helps with the nightmares too, having someone he trusts next to him.

For a while, it’s good, and Robert is… somewhere close to happy.

So of course he fucks up.

There’s not even anything noteworthy or remarkable about the day it happens.

They’ve had coffee, and now Robert has to go to work.

“Have a good day”, he says, and then he leans over, as if that is something they do, and kisses Mack, square on the lips.

It only lasts a few seconds, and it feels so natural that he’s already halfway down the road when it catches up with him.

He just kissed Mack.

He kissed Mack.

A soft, sweet goodbye kiss.

Like that’s a normal thing to do with your mate.

Like that won’t fuck up their friendship.

He stands frozen in the middle of the street, imagining it.

Mack will surely distance himself now. All the casual touches will stop, the hugs and the claps on the back and the arms wrapped around his waist and the hands playing with his hair, the sitting too close on the couch, the sleeping in the same bed, and… fuck.

Robert’s runs his hands through his hair.

Maybe he can fix this, pass it off as a joke or something.

He’ll have to be more careful in the future, obviously, so he doesn’t slip up again, but he could do it, if it means not losing Mack’s friendship.

He thinks about nothing else all day.

After work, he’s sitting in a field, staring at nothing, still trying to figure out what to do, and Mack finds him there, because of course he does.

Mack sits down next to him, their shoulders touching, as close as if nothing has happened.

“You okay?”

Robert sighs.

“No”, he says, because he’s too used to telling Mack the truth.

“Wanna talk about it?”

“No”, he says again, even though he’s not as sure about that one.

Mack hums thoughtfully, and then he wraps an arm around Robert’s shoulders and pulls him even closer, and something occurs to Robert.

Mack might just be the kindest person he’s ever met.

He’s obviously willing to just let it go, pretend it never happened even.

Robert should be happy with that, but he’s not so sure he can.

“Mack”, he says, entirely too soft, and leans back a little to look at him.

Mack turns to look at him, their faces so so close, and when Robert looks into Mack’s eyes, everything else he has planned to say goes out the window.

He fists one hand in Mack’s shirt and pulls him close to kiss him again.

If Mack punches him in the face now, at least he’ll know exactly where he stands.

Except, nothing of the sort happens.

Instead, Mack kisses him back.

The hand on Robert’s shoulder is in his hair now, Mack’s other hand on his knee, his tongue prying Robert’s lips open, and the sound Robert makes is quite frankly embarrassing.

Doesn’t seem to matter though, because Mack just kisses him deeper.

Maybe Robert didn’t fuck up that badly after all.
