21st July 1796, death of Scottish poet Robert Burns at the age of 37. A pioneer of the Romantic Movement, his poetry would later influence William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Percy Bysshe Shelley through his sympathy of the American and French Revolutions, the abolition of slavery, and poetic advocacy of political reform. For the last year of his life Burn’s health began to deteriorate, which aged him prematurely and caused him to suffer fits of despondency. This despondency also had cause in his alienation due to his political writings, at a time where the revolution in France, had led to a repression of political beliefs in reform from the British government. Burns now is celebrated as the national poet of Scotland, and an important proto-Romantic poet. 25th July 1834, death of British romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, founder longside his fellow poet and friend William Wordsworth of the romantic movement in England. Coleridge is best known for his poems the ‘Rime of Ancient Mariner’, ‘Kubla Khan: A Vision’, and ‘Christabel'. Throughout his adult life Coleridge had crippling bouts of anxiety and depression; which were treated with heavy doses of laudanum, resulting in a lifelong opium addiction. This addiction to opium led to the majority of Coleridge’s visions which he transcribed into poetic visions.
