After leaving SNL, #DanaCarvey and #RobertSmigel tried their hand at primetime, with a sketch show. Making a total of eight episodes, (only seven of which aired) and viewed as a bit of a misfire at the time (its lead in was Home Improvement, for some whiplash, and lost SIX MILLION viewers with it’s first sketch), it’s now considered ahead of it’s time, showcasing the beginning of many comedy titans (#StephenColbert, #SteveCarrell, #LouisCK as headwriter, #BillChott, #HeatherMorgan, the only female regular cast member; who crushed it, #ElonGold). Though sort of planned, the change of sponsors for each episode (a throwback to variety shows of yore) was humorous (some did musical numbers) and omg am I jealous of the live studio audience that got to go to the tapings, and participate in the Q&A’s Carvey did during some opening monologues (that prayer for Josh😆). Most of the show hit for me, the news and election bits brought a lot of nostalgia, the anti-Diana stuff did not age well. (I also still don’t get the guys who pay for stuff and run off, even after watching it all several times (I wouldn’t have been one of those six million that left after the first sketch)) some of my fave impressions and sketches include: Colbert’s George Harrison, Carvey’s McCartney, Waiters Nauseated by Food, Skinheads from Maine (wooboiii that’s sadly still kinda relevant), Germans who Say Nice Things, Grandma Clown, The Drowsy Boy Chair, Clinton jogging/Vote ‘96, Donald Peretti/MaDonny, the Oliver Stone/George Washington movie, the Rich Little Story of Jesus (my god the impressions within impressions), Carvey’s hair as Kato Kaelin, the Sothebys Auction, the Brokaw/Gerald Ford “pretape” segments, Streyhound, The Rockefeller Animal Institute, Elon Gold’s Jeff Goldblum and David Schwimmer, and probably my favorite: the NBA on NBC parody (the announcers height difference, the refs size, those Rodman legs😆👌🏼) #sketchshow #comedy #aheadofitstime #ABC #90s #nostalgia #90snostalgia @billchott @stephenathome @thedanacarvey (8 eps, ‘96) tv show of 2020 number 2) #TheDanaCarveyShow https://www.instagram.com/p/CHrWdFbHrkr/?igshid=1ba1qux96cszu
