Day 2 in my #365classicmoviechallenge 😊: tonight I’m watching the 1936 film “Stowaway” starring Shirley Temple, Robert Young & Alice Faye also co-starring Helen Westley & Arthur Treacher 😊 1936 was a big year for Shirley she starred 3 huge films that year Dimples, Poor Little Rich Girl and this film that I’m watching tonight and she would top the top 10 box office draws list for a 2nd year in a row she was no. 1 for 4 years from 1935 to 1938 😊 This is her 1st of 2 films she did with Robert Young they wouldn’t be in another film together until 1949 when Shirley was an adult in the film “Adventure In Baltimore” and it’s also her 2nd film with Alice Faye as she was in “Poor Little Rich Girl” with her, Jack Haley & Gloria Stuart earlier that year 😊 Alice Faye was also one of the Fox’s biggest stars in the 30s along with Shirley 😊. Her first major film debut was in the 1934 film “George White’s Scandals” starring Rudy Vallee & Jimmy Durante. Fox wanted at first to make Alice their version of Jean Harlow and starred in films like “Now I’ll Tell” with Spencer Tracy & “1935 Scandals” with James Dunn & Eleanor Powell for instance but when Fox merged with 20th Century they softened her image to be more family friendly and changed her look to be more natural and her Star got even bigger when she starred in the 2 Shirley Temple films. She would later go on to have hits of her own including “In Old Chicago”, “Alexander’s Ragtime Band”, “Hello, Frisco, Hello” (which includes the Oscar-winning song “You’ll Never Know”) & her last film “Fallen Angel” before leaving Hollywood altogether at the peak of her career in 1945 (one of few to ever do so during those times) due to family life and conflict with Fox head Darryl F.
