30 YEARS AGO! • June 9, 1984 - Cyndi Lauper started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Time After Time' a No.3 hit in the UK. Worldwide, the song is her most commercially successful single after "Girls Just Want to Have Fun". It was nominated for Song of the Year at the 1985 Grammy Awards. Lauper co-wrote "Time After Time" with Philadelphia rocker Rob Hyman of The Hooters, who also supplied backup vocals to the song. In a 2006 interview on Sound Off with Matt Pinfield (episode 212) on HDNet, Lauper related how the song was written. She indicated much of the lyrics were written about occurrences in the studio and her life at the time. Hyman explained in an interview with Songfacts that he and Lauper stayed in the studio after the sessions composing the song. Lauper conceived the title after seeing the 1979 Malcolm McDowell film of the same name, and built the song from there. Hyman said, "we never did a demo of the song. We just kind of bashed it out on the piano over a couple of days, maybe a week or two period. It really did happen pretty quickly, and we needed to because the album was being finished. I'd say in 2 or 3 sessions the song was pretty much done. Didn't do a demo, we went right to the 24-track machine. The demo was what you hear. That was literally the first real recording besides some little cassette ideas.
