Day 1
“Are you...are you pulling down mistletoe?”
Part 1 of the 25 days of Christmas I’m doing.
Original list here
Pairing: Chrom x Robin
“Are you...are you pulling down mistletoe?”
Chrom stopped, his mug of hot cocoa resting at parted lips as he saw the tactician hanging three stories above the ground upside down, grabbing handfuls of the foliage and putting it into a bag with a grin on his face. The lord always thought the smile he wore was amazing but not when he was in so much danger.
“Ah, Chrom!! you weren't supposed to see this!” The white hair contrasted to the light blush on his face from the cold winter air. He looked slightly startled by the the lord’s voice suddenly breaking his train of thought. Robin sounded nervous which suddenly made Chrom worried. “Robin please get down from there. What if you fell??”
“Don’t worry Chrom I’ll be fine, I’m about to come down anyway.” the silver haired man hummed and grabbed for another vine. The moment his hand grabbed it, his leg slipped from the branch, earning a yelp as he started falling. Chrom was there in an instant, sliding to catch the falling tactician, grass and dirt thrown into the air, his mug falling and shattering behind him. Robin landed, knocking the wind out of the the blue haired man. After a moment robin opened his eyes and looked down at his leader who he practically crushed “Oh my Gods” he moved quickly to get off “Chrom I’m so sorry, are you oka-” he paused when he saw the other man hold up his hand for him to stop. “I’m ok, dont worry about me. I’m more worried about you.” Chrom winced as he sat up at the strain in his chest, even with the other helping him, finally deciding to rest on his elbows “why were you even up there at all?” he glanced down at the bag of mistletoe still hooked to Robin’s hip.
Before answering, the tactician stood and offered a hand to the taller man who gladly took it, pulling him up. Chrom winced as his injured chest protested against him but he kept a straight face to hear his friend out. “Well since the christmas festival is coming up I wanted to make it special for me. This is really my first christmas that I will remember since I can’t really remember any before this.” he fumbled with the bag and pulled it off to show his leader. Chrom eyed the bag wearily. He thought the tactician was radiant with a grin and sparkles in his eyes as always but it hurt him to think that Robin might want to get someone else to kiss him a few days from now. The leader had been pining for the other for the past few months, head over heels with nothing he could do about it. “That sounds like a great idea, but who is this meant for?”
“You” Robin said it without hesitation with a perfectly innocent smile.
Meanwhile chrom was a mess. He froze and could feel his face turning a deep shade of red as he sputtered, trying to find the words stuck in his throat. “...What?” chrom felt like he was in heaven as he stared at the man before him. Robin saw chrom struggling and frowned “Oh my Gods, Chrom are you sure you are ok?? Your face is red and you can’t breathe! What if i punctured a lung or something? I'm taking you back to get healed come on.” he grabbed the lord’s wrist and started dragging him towards camp before he felt resistance, Chrom pulling him back to halt their steps
“Robin im fine! You can't just...just casually say that and walk away!” He was exasperated and his hands were shaking. Robin shot him a confused look “why? What are you talking about…” his hand went to his chin as he mumbled to himself “this must be a more powerful hex than Gaius let on” Chrom went stiff for a second time as he heard the mischief maker’s name and rubbed his temples, trying to stay calm “Robin….what did Gaius tell you?”
Robin perked up and grabbed a small branch from the bag he was still holding “The others were talking about mistletoe, and Gaius told me it was a tradition to surprise someone you care about with it and something special would happen” Robin’s voice got more quiet as he pondered to himself “he only said it was some sort of hex and something about about good fortune...I'm not sure how this is supposed to work though.” he looked back up at Chrom who was stone faced “Tharja agreed with him and judging by your reaction...something is happening so I guess they weren't wrong.” He continued mumbling to himself while Chrom covered his face with his hands, a rush of emotions overwhelming him.
Part of him promised to have Tharja and Gaius doing extra cleaning duties for the next week. Another part of him was upset with himself for getting so hopeful, forgetting for a moment that this is someone he can never have. He peered through the opening in his fingers at Robin, mumbling to himself and worriedly biting his thumb as he studied the mistletoe intensely. The leader couldn’t help it when he busted out laughing, half at himself, and half at this whole situation. He laughed until there were tears beading at his eyes as robin paused to watch on, face completely blank
“Chrom?... ok I’m totally doing this wrong, I think it backfired and is making you go crazy. I'm going to burn it.” robin started to walk away until Chrom took a breath of air and smiled at the other “No, you aren't doing it right, come here” At this Robin whipped his head around with a surprised look. “...you know?? Why didn't you tell me earlier? I could have kill you!” Robin looked worried out of his mind and pushed chrom’s shoulder, being careful not to hurt his sore chest from his earlier fall.
“Ok, ok, calm down its no hex, just an old tradition. Come here let me show you how it's done.” The taller man beckoned him closer as he took a small branch from the bag and twisted it through his fingers, talking slowly “people take this and hang it above doorways at parties and sometimes just hold it above two people. It's just a fun tradition people do at christmas, nothing to fret over.” At his words Robin began to relax and smiled softly. Suddenly he took the branch Chrom was toying with and held it above the two of them. “Like this?” Chrom watched every move of his hand until it came to rest above them, his eyes then went to the mistletoe, then Robin, then his lips.
Chrom felt that blush from earlier rising back to his cheeks as he coughed, ripping his eyes away quickly “yeah...that’s it” Robin pushed his lips together and looked down at his feet in frustration “Ok, so now what?”
“What?” Chrom stiffened yet again, the cold winter air suddenly blowing on his steadily heating skin as his eyes snapped to Robin’s, they were bright with curiosity. “Every tradition you have told me about for this holiday has something people can indulge in and have fun with. If this is all the tradition is it just seems...wasteful” Robin looked down at the branches in his bag, his eyebrows knit together.
Chrom swallowed hard “no, you are right. There is another part…” his foot tapped on the cold ground as he tried to stare anywhere but the one in front of him who is practically torturing him at this point “i just...can’t tell you what it is” he fought the blush rising again as Robin suddenly huffed and frowned at his words “Chrom, how am i supposed to partake in this tradition if i don’t know how its supposed to go?” the smaller of the two let out a huff, getting impatient to figure this out. “Why cant you tell me?”
“Robin I can’t”
“Chrom-”
“No, i just can’t... say it.” Chrom closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to calm himself and keep the images of Robin’s lips out of his wandering mind.
“Alright. If you can’t tell me, just show me”
Chrom slowly opened his eyes to peer at the other, something within him snapping. “...Are you sure about that?”
“Chrom you know I don’t remember how these things go. I love Christmas and want to have the best time with my friends so yes. I’m very sure.” Robin held earnest eyes as he stared at the leader.
“Well…” The leader straightened up and looked away “first just...close your eyes” Robin did as he was told and closed them, his hands at his sides as he patiently waited. Chrom finally looked him square in the face the moment he saw they were closed and his eyes were immediately drawn to Robin’s lips. He audibly swallowed and brought his trembling hands to grab at the other’s shoulders as he slowly brought his face closer, his breath held without knowing.
“Robin, you trust me right?”
“...with my life” there was a tone of finality to it that made the Blue haired man smile to himself.
Once the prince had made it dangerously close to meeting his lips he stopped, his eyes drifting over the other’s face, trying to remember this moment in case it was the last time this ever happened. Another second passed before chrom finally shut his eyes and closed the distance between them. Robin’s breath stopped as his eyes shot open. The kiss was slow and delicate and completely one sided until Robin could breathe again and joined in. The kiss only lasted a few moments but it felt like an eternity to them as they both pulled away. Robin stared wide eyed at Chrom and the other mirrored the look until it finally dawned on him what he had just done. He suddenly let go of his shoulders and looked away, trying to hide his blush from the other. “That’s um….that’s it...I’m..I’m gonna go. Just forget about the mistletoe, I’m sure after that we don’t need it at the party” The leader forced a smile and turned to go until he heard a faint voice behind him. “I...Actually I think I’m still going to hang it in a few places…”
“...is that so?”
“..Yeah” Robin shifted uncomfortably and pulled his scarf closer to himself as chrom began walking off again.
The entire way home chrom was torn because he believed Robin loved another but if he had stopped to look back he would have seen Robin had fallen back into the grass with a hand over his mouth. All the while whispering to himself about how to get the two of them under the mistletoe again.
