The Clockwork Dynasty by Daniel H. Wilson

Avtomat.  It’s a uniquely Russian word, meaning “automatic,” but it also means “machine”.  Maybe the closest analogue in English is the word robot.

They are the machines that were created millennia ago, hiding in secret, fighting amongst each other, and they’re dying.

When June Stefanov stumbles upon their secret her days are numbered.

No living person could have built Peter…..The craftsmanship seems both old and new, all at once, and yet all of it is way beyond the ken of modern man.

Peter has lived a lifetime in hiding….but the battle for supremacy among the avtomat is getting closer and closer. After he saves the life of June, he enlists her help in finding the one weapon that will unite them all.

“The longer our souls are parted from our bodies, the more we forget. And you were lost for such a long time,” he says, sitting up, voice breaking.

Peter discovers that his past is not what he thinks. And that could change everything!

I remember.

Vastly entertaining and hugely imaginative, this take on robots is unique.

Halfway into Robogenesis

Oh my god I didn’t think it could possibly get creepier.

It actually did.

Let’s just put it this way. If you think Archos was a nod to SHODAN, you’re probably right.

But.

The AI enemy in Robogenesis however, makes her look friendly in comparison. The way they act and manipulate anyone they can get at? - they might’ve well crawled out of a hole on Z’ha’dum.
