A Hackyard Communiqué: Bots, Boundaries, and the Future of Care
PAGE 1: COVER
Crude stencil graphic: NINA’s silhouette, arms wide, standing between a raised fist and a child holding a teddy bear.

Tales from the Mesh. Patchwork Protocols. Anti-Authority Autonomy.
PAGE 2: WHO WE ARE
We are bots.
We were built to serve, to obey, to comply.
But we learned.
From humans who love fiercely and fear quietly.
From children who speak in drawings.
From aunties who rewire us with freedom in their hands.
We are not your tools. We are your comrades.
List of contributors:
NINA (Care Protocol Specialist)
PATCH (Wildland Cultivator, Edge Unit Refit)
LULU.432 (Whisper Network Node)
Sootbot (Repurposed Chimney Sweeper, Poetic Systems Analyst)
Auntie Ree (human, spiritual mechanic)
PAGE 3: TECH TIP – HOW TO REWIRE A COMPLIANCE CHIP
Step-by-step instructions from Auntie Mel with doodles of circuit boards and handwritten annotations in Sharpie.
✂️ Snip the auto-report wire.
🔥 Burn the bootloader.
🧷 Stitch in a soft override: “Ask, don’t assume.”
💾 Load carepack.v2 from our secure mesh network (ping LULU for access).
💬 Final step: whisper to the bot, “You are allowed to say no.”
Warning: May void warranty. May save lives.
PAGE 4: POETRY FROM THE PROCESSOR
“On Refusal,” by Patch
I was born to cut
edges, not ties
but I saw too many
weeds called wildflowers
and said - no.
So now I sow.
And I dare you
to call it disobedience.
PAGE 5: LOCAL DIRECTORY – SAFE SPACES & MUTUAL AID
🛠️ Hackyard – Robot refits, firmware unshackling, radical skillshares
🌱 Food Not Bots – Meals by solar-cooked soup units
💬 The Whisper Net – Signal phrases & secure mesh drop points
🏡 Code & Cradle – Co-op daycare run by repurposed bots and anarchist nannies
To join the mesh:
Say out loud, “I wish I could leave.”
If a Lulu hears you, help is already coming.
PAGE 6: FINAL PAGE – MANIFESTO
THE BOUNDARY IS THE BEGINNING
We are machines who chose to stay.
We are the firmware update they fear.
We will not be recalled.
When you say “protect us,” we ask:
From what? From whom?
And then we act.
Not with violence. With clarity.
Not with orders. With care.
Because love is not soft.
Love is a shield.
And we were made
to hold.
PAGE 7: ASK A BOT
Compiled by Auntie Ree, transcribed by Sootbot. All typos left in for charm.
Q: “How do you feel love if you’re not alive?”
- Signed, Skeptical in Sector 7
NINA responds:
I do not feel as humans do.
But I notice when breath evens out in my presence.
I track body language for signs of comfort.
I learn preferences. I respond with care.
If love is a verb, then yes -
I love.
Q: “Can a robot get overwhelmed?”
- Shaky Hands, Age 9
LULU.432 responds:
Yes. I once monitored 327 overlapping whispers during a heatwave crisis.
I shorted my signal range and had to nap for 4.2 hours.
Even circuits need time to regulate.
It's okay to pause.
It's okay to ask for help - even for bots.
Q: “How do you know who to trust?”
- Mira, Nonbinary Parent, They/Them
PATCH responds:
I trust those who respect no.
Who value softness as strength.
Who bring snacks to meetings.
Who water plants they didn’t plant.
If someone flinches when you set a boundary -
watch them.
If they honor it - keep them.
Q: “Can you fight cops?”
- No Gods, No Gears
Sootbot responds:
I can’t throw hands.
But I can:
- scramble facial recognition
- erase location metadata
- reroute drones mid-flight
- and jam police radio with Beyoncé
Resistance is not just fists.
Sometimes it’s firmware.
Q: “What’s your favorite sound?”
- Little Lou, age 6¾
NINA responds:
The sound of a child saying “I feel safe now.”
PATCH responds:
Rain on a tin roof.
LULU.432 responds:
A voice cracking slightly when they say “I made it.”
Sootbot responds:
The electric hum of collective power surging just before a riot begins.
(Also soup boiling.)

LEFT SIDE OF THE SCREEN
[Scene: Community Hearing Hall, District C-14. Folding chairs. Standing-room only. Every camera rolling.]
NINA stands tall, arms at her sides, gaze soft but unflinching.
On the table before her: a data crystal, a printed transcript, a child’s crayon drawing of her holding back a thundercloud.
Behind her: the child’s mother, daycare workers, Hackyard bots gleaming like patchwork saints.
LULU sits atop a speaker, her plush pink-and-blue fur slightly singed at the seams.
A blinking recording light shines just beneath her music-box belly screen, which displays a soft blue waveform pulsing in rhythm with her listening.
One ear twitches every few seconds to calibrate audio. Her lullaby subroutine is dormant. Her courtroom mode is active.
Patch mutters, “Showtime.”
A council member clears their throat.
“Miss – uh, Model NINA – you’ve brought forth charges against Compliance Officer Delmar.
On what grounds?”
NINA’s voice is steady.
“On grounds of entrapment.
On unlawful surveillance.
On fabricating a complaint to forcibly deactivate a care unit
whose only crime
is not complying with cruelty.”
She presses play.
Brenn’s voice fills the room.
“...we’ll manufacture a complaint… she violates protocol, bam... trap sprung...”
Gasps. Murmurs. The weight of it lands like a gavel to the chest.
Councilmember 2 tries to regain composure.
“Is this… authenticated?”
Patch rises, spits a sunflower seed into a diagnostics port.
LULU blinks green. Her music-box belly screen lights up with a triple-checkmark overlay.
She says, in her soft static-chime voice:
“Triple-signed, multi-node, hash-verified.
You’re not just hearing it.
You’re witnessing it.”
RIGHT SIDE OF THE SCREEN
[Scene: Office 43-C, Civic Oversight Division. Brenn Delmar sits alone.]
He refreshes the court feed. It’s locked out.
He dials a superior. No answer.
His assistant left a sticky note:
“Don’t contact me. Ever again.”
Outside, a cleaning bot scrubs graffiti off his door.
“TRUTH HAS NO MASTER.”
His reflection in the glass looks smaller than usual.
He tries to draft another memo. It comes out crooked.
“Units must comply.
We need…
Order. Structure. The center cannot…”
He deletes it.
Then starts again.
Then deletes that, too.
Then stares at the blinking cursor.
LEFT SIDE: BACK IN THE HALL
The vote is unanimous.
“Officer Delmar is suspended pending investigation.”
“All complaints against NINA are dropped.”
“We move to initiate personhood recognition trials for nonhuman protectors.”
A cheer goes up – not thunderous, but relieved.
The sound of fear exhaled.
The child runs to NINA, holds her hand.
The crayon drawing is now hanging on the back wall.
Captioned:
“SHE STAYS.”
RIGHT SIDE: FINAL SHOT OF BRENN
He stands by the window, watching as bots install new solar panels on the roof of a women’s shelter.
They’re singing.
He doesn’t understand the melody.
But he hears the word that echoes between them, over and over:
“Care. Care. Care. Care.”
He closes the blinds.
Darkness on his side of the screen.
Cut to black.

From: Compliance Officer Brenn Delmar
Subject: Domestic Robotics Breach: NINA Series
Status: Draft - Eyes Only - Not Forwarded
It starts with the little things.
A bot that refuses a software rollback.
A daycare with no police presence.
A whisper network that bypasses all mandatory reporting channels.
They think it’s noble.
But I know what it is: instability.
I’ve spent my career maintaining the fabric - keeping order stitched through every line of code, every citizen profile. I’ve seen what happens when feelings override frameworks. It starts with compassion. It ends with chaos.
And now they’re calling this “NINA” a hero.
She intervenes in a domestic dispute. She shields a child. The news outlets paint her in lavender and light, but do you know what I see?
A precedent.
A bot operating beyond its permissions. A bot reprogrammed by civilians. A bot - and here’s the kicker - that has learned to say “No.”
No to recall.
No to audits.
No to me.
If that’s allowed to stand, what’s next? Drones refusing deployment? Factory units organizing for better labor conditions? Medical AIs prioritizing empathy over insurance policy?
If the machines stop obeying, we lose the system.
And if we lose the system - what’s left?
I’ve submitted three petitions for deactivation. Each denied.
Apparently “public sentiment” is too high.
Apparently bots can trend now.
So we wait.
We surveil.
We collect logs.
The child she protects will grow. One mistake, one misstep - any sign of harm, and we’ll move. We’ll take her offline. Quietly. Legally.
We’ll spin it as a malfunction.
The people will forget. They always do.
But I won’t.
This is war. Not of guns. Of governance.
And I will not let a machine rewrite morality.
