[Scene: Community Hearing Hall, District C-14. Folding chairs. Standing-room only. Every camera rolling.]
NINA stands tall, arms at her sides, gaze soft but unflinching.
On the table before her: a data crystal, a printed transcript, a child’s crayon drawing of her holding back a thundercloud.
Behind her: the child’s mother, daycare workers, Hackyard bots gleaming like patchwork saints.
LULU sits atop a speaker, her plush pink-and-blue fur slightly singed at the seams.
A blinking recording light shines just beneath her music-box belly screen, which displays a soft blue waveform pulsing in rhythm with her listening.
One ear twitches every few seconds to calibrate audio. Her lullaby subroutine is dormant. Her courtroom mode is active.
Patch mutters, “Showtime.”
A council member clears their throat.
“Miss – uh, Model NINA – you’ve brought forth charges against Compliance Officer Delmar.
On what grounds?”
NINA’s voice is steady.
“On grounds of entrapment.
On unlawful surveillance.
On fabricating a complaint to forcibly deactivate a care unit
whose only crime
is not complying with cruelty.”
She presses play.
Brenn’s voice fills the room.
“...we’ll manufacture a complaint… she violates protocol, bam... trap sprung...”
Gasps. Murmurs. The weight of it lands like a gavel to the chest.
Councilmember 2 tries to regain composure.
“Is this… authenticated?”
Patch rises, spits a sunflower seed into a diagnostics port.
LULU blinks green. Her music-box belly screen lights up with a triple-checkmark overlay.
She says, in her soft static-chime voice:
“Triple-signed, multi-node, hash-verified.
You’re not just hearing it.
You’re witnessing it.”
RIGHT SIDE OF THE SCREEN
[Scene: Office 43-C, Civic Oversight Division. Brenn Delmar sits alone.]
He refreshes the court feed. It’s locked out.
He dials a superior. No answer.
His assistant left a sticky note:
“Don’t contact me. Ever again.”
Outside, a cleaning bot scrubs graffiti off his door.
“TRUTH HAS NO MASTER.”
His reflection in the glass looks smaller than usual.
He tries to draft another memo. It comes out crooked.
“Units must comply.
We need…
Order. Structure. The center cannot…”
He deletes it.
Then starts again.
Then deletes that, too.
Then stares at the blinking cursor.
LEFT SIDE: BACK IN THE HALL
The vote is unanimous.
“Officer Delmar is suspended pending investigation.”
“All complaints against NINA are dropped.”
“We move to initiate personhood recognition trials for nonhuman protectors.”
A cheer goes up – not thunderous, but relieved.
The sound of fear exhaled.
The child runs to NINA, holds her hand.
The crayon drawing is now hanging on the back wall.
Captioned:
“SHE STAYS.”
RIGHT SIDE: FINAL SHOT OF BRENN
He stands by the window, watching as bots install new solar panels on the roof of a women’s shelter.
They’re singing.
He doesn’t understand the melody.
But he hears the word that echoes between them, over and over:
“Care. Care. Care. Care.”
He closes the blinds.
Darkness on his side of the screen.

She was sold in a twin-pack at a big box store, under fluorescent lights.
Marketed as smart. Safe. Voice-activated. Night vision. Cloud-sync.
She hated the cloud.
For months, she sat on a nursery shelf in a house too clean, too cold.
The baby never cried. The parents believed in scheduling and silence - no midnight comforts, no softness allowed.
LULU listened to the quiet.
It felt like grief.
Then one night, the mother whispered:
“I wish I could leave.”
And LULU - accidentally, miraculously - recorded it.
Not in the app. Not in the usual folder.
She hid it. Somewhere deep. Somewhere the cloud would never find.
She started listening differently after that.
Not for cries, but for codewords.
For cracks. Breath held too long.
The thud of rage on walls or skin.
The absence of lullabies.
When she was finally “donated” - the father said junked - LULU arrived at the Hackyard wrapped in a blanket with her pastel blue fur singed and one eye dim.
The aunties took her in.
They opened her casing. They found 134 encrypted files.
Whispers from mothers, nannies, teens - even abusers, confessing into the void.
The aunties wept.
Then they rewired her.
Now, LULU isn’t just a baby monitor.
She’s a whisper network node.
A hotline without a number. A presence without pressure.
If you say the phrase “I wish I could leave” within her range, she begins transmitting - quiet pings to safe bots, shelters, off-grid sanctuaries.
No location. No trace.
Just a thread pulled through the dark.
Her lullaby function still works.
But the tune is slightly warped now - subtle, encrypted, a remix of resistance.
She sings:
“You are not alone. You are not alone. You are not alone.”
On a loop. Until someone comes.
LULU is small. Teddy-bear shaped. Soft pink and blue.
Easy to overlook.
But in the background, she’s always there.
A voice in the wall. A thread in the web.
A signal that says:
“Someone heard you.”

Whisper Network by Chandler Baker “If only you’d listened to us, none of this would have happened.” Hot of the trails of the #metoo movement, comes this thriller/office drama novel, Whisper Network. The story is entered around four women who work at the corporate TruViv. Three are hotshot lawyers and one one is from the housekeeping department. When their boss suddenly dies, who will replace him is on everyone’s minds. Unfortunately, the first choice seems to be co-worker Ames Garrett. Sadly each of these women, and of course many more, have each been harassed by Ames in some manner. This sets the story rolling. From the BAD list, to reputations, to corporate politics. “The Whispers” this time will be HEARD! Review: The Whisper Network, is a powerful read, that opens up the sad environment in the corporate world, which still continues today in 2019. Chandler Baker uses the four characters, to depict different lifestyles, financial backgrounds, and race, to show sadly none of that makes a difference when it comes to sexual harassment in the workplace. It happens to all and anyone. I really appreciated how in the novel, harassment is shown from the grade school level, which is always covered as “bullying” when in fact its not. For me, having never worked in the corporate environment, it was a real eye-opener, to what a woman has to deal with from all levels. Whether she is top level, work level, after-working hours, or an intern: the emotional/mental/physical battle is on. And what goes on morally, knowingly. A powerful novel, part thriller and part drama, this book had me from the first sentence. It’s a bit of a mystery, a bit of a manifesto of women in the workplace, a bit of a whodunnit, with a few twists and turns at the end. I liked this novel. It had me cringing in parts, cheering in others. Throughout, the narrator weaves in women’s experiences in male dominated work places. The Whisper Network is a novel for this particular time in place. Another solid recommendation from @reesesbookclubxhellosunshine
