Business card for Cranford, NJ record store Off the Record, acquired sometime in the early-to-mid nineties.

This is a business card from one of what used to many small, sole-proprietor record stores along the northeast corridor. When I lived in New York City, I’d often taken weekend road trips to New Jersey, hitting every record store between Pier Platters in Hoboken and the Princeton Record Exchange in... well, Princeton.

I don’t have a clear picture of this particular store, but I can summon its essence nonetheless: small storefront in a quaint downtown, racks of slightly dog-eared and questionably-priced LPs of mainly 70s and 80s vintage, with one or two unwitting gems lurking within.

Off the Record || Buffy & Faith

            "No love songs, right." the shitty mobile service you get out in the boonies glitches and cuts out every other sentence, so the best Faith can hope for is Buffy's heard enough to not need directions to the restaurant. Faith hangs up on her pretty abruptly, but not before laying out, "Don't say anything to Dean, okay? Dunno how much he knows, yet."

It's almost an hour later, and Faith's been holding up the wall outside B&E's. It's cold, but she doesn't seem to notice it. She's on edge, clearly. Absently discarding a cigarette she's almost dragged down to the filter, flicking it out onto the street and just about to light another when she finally sees Buffy. Looking ridiculously posh for a small, rural town, and bundled up a bit more appropriately for the weather than Faith is.

     She pockets the pack and lighter, "Hey. Long way out, man. Sorta makes you appreciate Sunnydale, huh? Everything in walking distance."
