"No." Villain whipped away so they couldn't see the electricity whirring behind Hero's exposed eye sockets. The do-gooder had looked really rough after their fight with Supervillain today, and Villain had thought it would be sweet to sneak into the agency dorms to patch them up. But they hadn't expected...this. "This is a lie. A trick. You're a fake. The agency is trying to screw with my head!"

"Villain," Hero begged, reaching out the metallic fingers of one stripped hand.

"You're just a copy!"

"Yes, I am a copy. In looks and in powers, I am Hero. But I am also me. I am also the person you fell in love with."

Villain shook their head rapidly. "I've seen Hero bleed. Hero is human."

"Hero is dead."

Villain's stomach lurched, and they whirled on the robotic fraud standing in their lover's place.

"Has been for years," Not-Hero said. "You never knew them. You saw them on TV sure, and they saved you that one time all those years ago. But everything else. The talks, the dates, the kisses. That was me."
