Runescratch has an AU where Tadashi's dad made a robot infused with microbots. Tadashi somehow gets possession of the robot (inheritance?) and finds out that it's an AI and names him Hiro, or maybe already knew he was an AI named Hiro not much detail there. Hiro sometimes uses the microbots for some not so good things (whether stupid ideas or illegal stuff) and also wants to be human but obvs isn't.

Tadashi had known Hiro from a young age, watching his father work on the robot with wide eyes filled with wonder, and then later interacting with the robot to help his father refine Hiro’s AI. He’d absolutely adored the robot, thinking of Hiro as a brother as they spent time together and played (his father considered it an exercise in establishing exactly what Hiro’s microbots could do. Tadashi just thought it was awesome that Hiro could turn his arms into monkey bars for Tadashi to swing off of.

But then one day Hiro’s AI had a malfunction, and he ended up accidentally hurting Tadashi while he spazzed out. After that Tadashi’s dad decided that it was too dangerous to have Tadashi around the robot anymore, and Tadashi didn’t see Hiro again.

Until after his father died.

A few months after the funeral, Tadashi finally got around to cleaning out his father’s old lab space. When digging through the piles of papers and boxes of tools and invention after invention, Tadashi happened to stumble upon Hiro, deactivated and lying on a table covered with a sheet. Curious, and honestly feeling a bit lonely and like he just needs someone to talk to now that his parents are gone, Tadashi decides to reactivate the robot, even though his last memories of Hiro involved pain and fear.

But when Hiro boots up again, his eyes lighting up and his body coming to life right before Tadashi’s eyes, it’s like no time has passed at all. He immediately grins up at Tadashi and asks if he’s ready to play again, as if he doesn’t even notice that Tadashi is years older now. And it completely catches Tadashi off guard, but he’s already raw from having just lost his parents, and now being slapped in the face with this memory of happier times, Tadashi just starts crying. He ends up on the floor, clutching at himself because it all just hit him at once, and he misses his parents so badly and he’s so alone and he just wants his family back.

Hiro just watches, unable to react because he wasn’t programmed to have empathy. But if Tadashi had been able to look at him, he might have seen something like concern in the robot’s human-like eyes.

Imagine Tadashi Hamada making Baymax and being like 'okay nothing is going to go wrong' and then two days after he's finished he wakes up to an excited robot Hiro thanking him for making a sibling. Yeah he did the accidental AI thing again. At least Baymax has a bigger starting database and Hiro's given him a copy of his answered questions database so Baymax's why phrase is only a few days long.

Tadashi is so . so grateful that Hiro shared his answered questions database with Baymax. after the year+ that Hiro was just constantly asking “why” and other various questions, Tadashi definitely would not have survived if Baymax had done the same for the same amount of time. 

Hiro and Baymax become super close as robo “siblings”, sharing and talking about their experiences as AIs. Hiro is more human looking than Baymax, can practically pass for a real human except for some minor things in his appearance that Tadashi still has to adjust and update, but Baymax definitely doesn’t look human at all. That’s not really a problem though, as they’re both different in their purpose as AIs, so the difference in appearance doesn’t bother either of them any. They’re still siblings.

Tadashi drinks coffee in the corner and contemplates never making another robot ever again in fear it will become sentient and have a soul and personality like his two “kids.” but then he sees Hiro laughing with Baymax, telling Baymax things, and Tadashi shrugs and smiles.

Android Hiro's obviously terrified reactions and Callaghan's comments get Callaghan removed from the courtroom. Also, all three robotic Hiros from my AUs 'sleep' to process data. Robot Hiro has the best sleep, Fighter Bot Hiro stays up too late, and Android Hiro keeps being woken up by the memories of Callaghan. He learns to process things by talking about them, but it's not as good as sleep. (The nightmares get rarer every week. )

Well I should hope that he would be removed. He’s disrupting the proceedings, they can remove you for that, right? Tadashi and Bei glare at the back of his head the whole time he’s being taken out, and if looks could kill? Whoo boy.

As for sleep mode (heh), I wonder. Do Robot Hiros dream of Electric Sheep? Or just big fluffy Baymaxes? XD

Android Hiro from the only child Tadashi AU has a 'why' phrase lasting well over a year and taking a good part of the second year to fully fade out. Tadashi is super proud. He's basically Hiro's dad, after all. (Hiro does end up rather shy due to various issues with people not believing that he's a proper self aware AI, or people thinking that he'd turn evil on them, but under his shyness, the endless barrages of 'why' and the sass he picks up from Tadashi he's still very nice. )

I’m picturing Tadashi showing Hiro off to the Nerd Crew like he showed off Baymax to Hiro in the movie. Looking confident and sure of himself, but when his project actually steps out to meet people, he’s actually really subtly nervous and watching everything carefully.

Not that he has anything to worry about. The others are absolutely delighted to meet Hiro, and are happy to answer as many questions as he can ask (except for Fred. Fred is not allowed to answer any more questions after they caught him telling Hiro that rumble strips on the highway were for blind drivers), and they basically lavish Hiro with attention. Tadashi is ridiculously relieved, both that they like Hiro, and that he finally gets a break from all the questions XD

(Hiro ends up calling them all Aunt and Uncle after he caught Wasabi off guard one day asking about what their relation was to him. “Aunt” Honey Lemon and “Uncle” Fred were thrilled, “Aunt” GoGo gave “Uncle” Wasabi a raised eyebrow, and Tadashi just shrugs and accepts it.)

AU where Tadashi is an only child.

He tries to make a personal assistant AI at 18, but due to programming during an all-nighter, he adds in about 10 copies of the various machine learning programs.

This does not seem to affect the little robot’s function at all; he’d programmed it to feel something like satisfaction when it succeeded in something he asked it to do, disappointment when it failed, and something vaguely like fear if either of them were in too much danger, and those all seem to work, and it does its work happily.

He’s surprised to find that the robot, on finding it doesn’t know something, starts asking him for definitions.

He answers as best as he can. It even, once, asks how you’d tell if an animal was sapient. Tadashi responds that, from studies, some very smart animals-parrots, ravens, and chimps-can be taught a little language and even understand it, but only people can ask or comprehend the question ‘why’.

The AI nods and goes back to what it was doing.

Almost a week later, the AI tells Tadashi that it never actually got his full name, just 'Tadashi’. Tadashi tells it that his full name is Tadashi Hamada. He expects the AI to nod or tell him that it’s updated its database or something.

Instead, it asks a question that rocks his world.

“Why?”

(By tomorrow, the AI’s happily calling himself Hiro. )

Now I'm imagining an AU where BOTH are robots, but because Hiro was a newer model, he has no port or anything to discern him from humans. He runs on biofuel (food) and sleeps to process info. Tadashi would be freaked and relieved, I think...

TADASHI would be freaked? Imagine HIRO. Tadashi at least has had his whole ‘life’ to come to terms with the existence of humanoid robots, Hiro’s kinda getting hit with it all at once.

Of course once he got over the shock, Hiro would immediately become the robot equivalent of a little hellion because MUAHAHAHA NOW HE CAN HACK COMPUTERS WITH HIS BRAIN.

Tadashi ends up somehow even MORE stressed than when he was trying to keep his secret.

Hiro dies in the accident and tadashi builds a Hiro robot with the same memories. So when he builds him and hangs with he starts crying cause it's not the same

Ugh, I’ve seen this done with a Tadashi robot, and it always breaks my heart. IT’S NEVER THE SAME BOYS. IT’S NEVER THE SAME.

…oooooh, but what if it was? Okay, so like, robot body, right? That’s what happens, and Tadashi tries to code it as much like Hiro as he can, but it just never seems to work. Eventually he’s just about to give up all hope.

Cue miracle event (The Blue Fairy makes Hirobot a real boy? Hiro happens to have already made some sort of code of himself for reasons and Baymax finds it? GHOST HIRO POSSESSES THE ROBOT???), and when Tadashi wakes up, even though he didn’t do anything, the Hirobot is suddenly acting EXACTLY like Hiro! He’s so happy he doesn’t even question it, he just does his happy dance.

(And then things can get sinister if it turns out Hirobot has a murderbot setting…)
