In hindsight, Zero should have done something about this sooner, but back in the early days the protocols for parts recovered from skirmishes with mavericks weren’t super well developed yet, and with the massive threats that kept coming up there had always been something more important than remembering he still had this sitting in a box in his quarters.

He had the box with him now, a plain unassuming cardboard affair.This was absolutely not appropriate containment procedures and in all likelyhood he was going to get a chewing out from whatever tech he ended up running into.

He knocked on the door to the lab as he entered, seeing if anyone was around.

Aspis checked her instruments as the cargo flyer neared the destination coordinates. A small team from the Maverick Hunters was supposedly in an old building down there, trying to carefully secure abandoned equipment. It wasn’t able to be teleported out, which meant that it had to be lifted out the old-fashioned way.

She’d been in-flight before all of the details had been ironed out, but she did distinctly remember “small team” being used. While her instruments weren’t able to pick up how many were actually in the target structure, they were picking up a little more activity than she would have expected out this far. She keyed her comms to check in.

“Maverick Hunter sampling team, this is Corporal Aspis Buckler, of the Nuvola Sky Carrier. Do you have friendlies outside the compound?”

“Sorry if I ran a bit late!” Work suddenly changed from a leisurely flow of edits to a sudden fire dumpster for tonight’s news package. Jayden spared some time grabbing a bite before rejoining her co-workers in editing hell. At least it would keep her busy until the evening hours. “I’ve got a good hour before I should head back to the station. You said there was another place you’d like to show me?”

Infiltration

Getting into the base was the easy part. Getting what he needed and finding a way back out? Now that would be the hard part.

Blackout, with no short amount of luck, had managed to sneak his way onto the Air Base while it was docked and cloak himself until he’d found his way into the vents. Sending a few of his nanite friends ahead to disable any sensors and alarms in his path, the maverick had made his way slowly through the ship until he’d made his way to a closed off room where he could work. He dropped down, made short work of the lone guard and moving the body aside, he set up to get to work.

Wires plugged into the computer board, his built-in hacking programs getting straight to work to unlock files and plans. More nanites crawled across the motherboard, slipping in between paper-thin cracks to attack the system more directly from within. While his programs worked efficiently, he couldn’t guarantee that he wouldn’t trip some sort of alert to a hacking attempt. He would need to be fast--take what he could manage, and get the hell out before they took off or caught him.

A couple files had been broken into, but Blackout had to admit--their firewalls were no joke. Just a little more...he could open just a little more.....

Free Jail-bird

The Hunter on duty at the security desk for the holding cells checked the cameras. Couple of the cells were empty, a few had confirmed mavericks in various states of discontent, awaiting interrogation. The first cell had a reploid sitting squarely in the middle of the room. The young hunter was still a bit surprised to see him, the duty roster had rotated him away from Holding for a couple weeks. He’d been on duty when the Lieutenant had been arrested. 

That had been what, a month ago now? He skimmed through the inmate notes on his terminal. He would have started digging deeper but he could hear someone approaching the counter.
