Robyn is a Jersey City artist based out of Hamilton Park. I love that hood!!!!! [ Robyn and I had met in the MFA painting program at San Francisco's Academy of Art in 2003. I think our appreciation for abstract art and both being from NJ allowed for a wonderful friendship over the years. We've remained close since her moving to Jersey City in 2005, witnessing the progression of one another's work over the years with annual studio visits both here in SF and JC. What I like most about Robyn's work is the California influence she brought to her work while engaging in the JC and NYC art world. Her application of paint is quick and thick while representing subject matter that can be seen as light and calming while mainting emotional content that can be seen as very heavy sometimes. I find her textures and compositions to be reminiscent of the Bay Area Figurative style, an influence she clearly picked up during her years in San Francisco and brought to the dense (and sometimes gloomy) streets of Jersey City. It's almost like watching two worlds collide! "The content of my work is inspired by my love of translating what attracts me visually to others. I am drawn to expressing the figure and the landscape in colorful and textural ways. My work is immediate, it is cathartic in a way. There is quick brush stroke, thick chunky color in places, scribbled lines, and a moment that can not be imitated. My landscape references are from places close my heart, the beaches on the Jersey shore and California. My figurative work concentrates mostly on the female form, but I do enjoy combining the figure with the landscape as an abstract element. For me when identifying with the figure as the subject, its about translating the moment or memory of time.
