What next for South Korea’s space industry?

Late last month, South Korea became the 11th member of the elite ‘space club’. Involving 150 companies and consisting of over 150,000 components, the South Korean NARO rocket successfully deployed its 100kg payload satellite into orbit on Jan 30th.

But what comes next for the Korean space industry?

  already home to a state-of-the-art mission director center, a launch pad, flight safety control facilities, a meteorological observatory, a rocket assembly facility, and a radar and optical tracking system, will be developed to also include an engine combustion test facility.

Also, the knock on effect of the successful launch has already been seen amongst Korea’s space and related industries, with some key companies’ stock price rising the maximum-daily-allowed 15% on the Korean stock market after the launch.

 R&D investment from entities involved in materials engineering, combustion engineering, control engineering, aircraft components, aerodynamics, stability systems, propulsion and satellite technologies is also seen increasing significantly.

And KARI, the Korean Aerospace Research Institute, is busy not only with its own aerospace R&D, but also on building an enhanced quality and certification system for aerospace products.

So, whatever comes next, it looks like a promising and opportunity-laden era in the Korean aerospace industry.
