one more post about my county burning down, now that that it has been 100% contained for about a month now.

many have donated dollars and resources for the valley fire, which is wonderful, but please keep it in mind and remember to look into what help is needed after weeks and months have passed. cobb and middletown are still in terrible shape, but the story is out of the news and fading from memory.

also consider offering your aid to victims of the rocky fire. that was the one near clearlake/lower lake that made national news a month before the valley fire. it was an enormous disaster as well. it has now been forgotten, and i imagine that those victims are not eligible for as much assistance. some were left without homes.

this week there has been slow, steady, gentle rain watering the earth. pray that the hillsides will not come sliding down in a downpour sometime this winter.

Support for Firefighters in California

We are raising funds for the firefighters that are risking their lives in fighting the California Rocky Fire of 2015.

Over 10,000 firefighters from 31 states, have come together to put out the California ROCKY FIRE of 2015.  These fires have been burning for weeks and have rampaged across almost 105 square miles. Gov. Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency to help gather additional firefighting resources.  These firefighters are risking their lives everyday using engines, air tankers and helicopters to battle the fire. Wildfires are costly and expensive to fight.

In the wake of a fire or disaster, people are injured, homes and families are destroyed and lives are changed forever. The firefighters know first hand the pain and suffering that can be caused in an instant. All donations will be given directly to fire stations in their operating districts.

The California ROCKY FIRE of 2015 has affected thousands of lives by having to evacuate from their homes. There are more than 13,000 northern Californians that have been told to evacuate. This is the worst fire in California, so far, this year with more than 70,000 acres being burned. Firefighters in Northern California spent a lot of time putting out hot spots along a scenic highway and dropping water from helicopters deep inside one of the raging wildfires. A state of emergency has been declared.

Let's show support for the firefighters that have been working so hard under dangerous conditions and thank them for all of their hard work they have done to save people's lives and put out the fire in California.

Climate Change, Wildfires, and the Economy

California’s Rocky Fire got so big it created its own weather system. Sign of the times ahead. 

Everybody is now talking about our failed mismanagement of forests - that we shouldn’t have let people build so many houses in such remote ares and we should have permitted more smaller fires. Shoulda coulda.

Despite the pointlessness of shoulda coulda reflections, the stark reality is upon us. California faces a fire season that is 78 days longer than it was just 45 years ago spurred by climate change and uncontrolled growth. The resulting costs are soaring - with more than 67% of the state’s budget projected to go to fire suppression instead of fire prevention. That’s bad because it represents a distinct shift away from forest management and directly to the unpredictable world of crisis management. More fires require larger percentages of our budgets, thus limiting prevention and increasing the likelihood of... more fires. The vicious cycle continueth. 

Two things need to happen to reverse this. First, these budgets need to grow, so that we can simultaneously concentrate our efforts on fire suppression and forest management. Second, our housing footprint cannot be allowed to expand into our tinderbox forests.
