yesterday i couldn’t see the other end of the sunflower field across from my house. california’s deadliest and most destructive wildfire on record is still burning. universities a hundred miles away from the incident have canceled classes so that no one has to go outside. normally, this is the time of year when the rain starts, but not now.

this summer we also had our largest fire on record. the ranch fire (part of the “mendocino complex”) covered more than five times as much land as the fires in 2015 that got that same poor, rural county on national news.

the compilation out today is to benefit victims of the mendocino complex and other recent disasters in lake and mendocino counties. 100% of money collected will go to two local charities. enjoy some spectacular music spanning all genres and styles. more information at the link: https://awkwardachesrecords.bandcamp.com/

SoCal Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge Modified for Valley Fire

On Friday, July 13th (cue ominous music), the Forest Service issued Closure Order #12-18-01. This order closes the entire San Gorgonio Wilderness “until the Valley Fire is declared out.” No camping or hiking in any of the closed area is allowed. The ranger station is cancelling permits for August and it looks like the area will be closed “indefinitely.”

I can't sleep so I was going through old pics on my phone and I happened across these... My neighbor is the caretaker to a man named Jerry who does metalwork in large scales and after the Valley Fire, Jerry was able to procure some of the old roadsigns that dotted the damage path... I've been told by him that the fire would have had to have been unbelievably hot to warp signs this way. I believe him since he works in heating metal but also I've heard that the heat was so intense that it liquified telephone lines an asphalt together over affects roads... Each time I leave the house, I pass these molten things. Fears can fade with time, but I don't make it a point to stop and look at these signs very often. I remember enough.
