#tbt #truthoughts20 We released ‘Live Up” by Rodney P feat The People’s Army & Might Moe soon after the riots that took place in England in 2011. When the riots were going on I asked everyone at the label if they had any music that we could put out that help reflect the frustration going on for ordinary people at the time. Rodney told me he had this track and they had filmed a video at the student protests that took place in London when the Conservative / Lib Dem government decided that only rich people should have the right to further education without getting into debt. We eventually released the track on a limited edition 7” with Success feat Harleighblu & Renegade Brass Band on the flip. Live Up really connected with a wider audience. I saw Frankie Boyle share the video to his timeline when released and it is used in the title sequence of the film 100 Streets starring Idris Elba. Rodney also recorded me a great Dubplate of this, which always goes down well in my DJ sets. I also asked Rodney if he could add something about Boris Johnson on the dubplate alongside the standard dubplate name checks…and Rodney definitely did not hold back! I am writing these #throwbackthursday posts each week as Tru Thoughts is celebrating 20 years of releasing music this year, but I am really looking forward to Tru Thoughts releasing a new Rodney P album in 2019.
