Unexpected Things

Author's note: Another late submission to Choices August Challenge. [All characters are owned by Pixelberry Studios] Book: Rules Of Engagement Pairing: Blake Yasuda x Party Twin (Jess) Rating: PG-13 Word count: 605 Summary: Blake and Jess have a special date on the last night of their trip. Based on the prompt: Choices August Challenge Day Twenty - Alaska  

The sun slowly sets as Jess checks her makeup in the mirror one more time. Her getaway trip to Alaska with Blake has been perfect to restore their energies and she wants to enjoy the most of their last date night before they go back to their busy lives in California. She smiles, puts on her coat and leaves the room.

"I know I'm late again, but it was just because I was--" She looks around the living room and furrows her brows as she sees no one is there. "Blake?" She goes to the bathroom and the kitchen, he is nowhere to be found. Is he mad because I'm late again? Jess frowns then fishes her phone from her coat pocket and sends him a text.

She grins and goes straight to the riverbank. Her eyes go wide as she approaches the place they stayed many times that week. The pier is lit by candles carefully placed on the floor while rose petals are spread everywhere. Her hands start to tremble. Blake smiles, extending his hand to her, leading her to the center of the dock.

"Blake, is this a...?" She trails off.

He nodded.

"Oh my god," she whispers, fanning herself with one hand in a failed attempt to control her emotions.

They stop and take a quick look at the breathtaking landscape before them.

"All my life, I knew who I wanted to be, where I wanted to go, but everything changed when I met you. You, with your welcoming smile, your wit, your free spirit... You changed me. You make me feel stronger, more carefree and happier than I could've possibly imagined. Every day with you is unique, any moment I know you'll do something unexpected because this is who you are. You're spontaneous, joyful, passionate and I love everything about you. You complete me. And I can only hope you feel the same I do." He takes a deep breath, produces a small turquoise jewelry box from his coat pocket, goes down on one knee as he opens the tiny box and looks up at her eyes, glistening with tears. "Jessica Tsui, will you marry me?"

"Yes!" She grins, tears running down her cheeks as she bends down, cups his face and kisses him fiercely.

Jess pulls away only to see Blake crying as well and kneels to shower kisses him again on his forehead, temples, cheeks, nose, chin until she finally presses her lips to his again. In between kisses, she whispers. "I love you so much."

"I love you too, my darling," he says wrapping her arms around her. "Jess?”

"Yeah."

"I still haven't put the ring on your finger."

Jess covers her face with one hand and laughs. "Oh my god..."

He shakes his head chuckling.

"It's one of these impulsive things I do you were talking about when you said I do unexpected things, isn't it?" She scratches her head.

"Yes." Hhe grins, cupping her face and brushes his thumbs on her cheeks. "But I wouldn't change a single thing about it."

She encircles her arms around him, pulling closer to her. 

"Jess?"

"Mmm?"

"The ring."

"Oh!" She smacks her forehead, making him chuckle. "Hey, can we do it sitting down on that blanket over there? My knees are killing me."

"Yes, please." he sighs in relief.

They laugh, stand up and go to the place where a small table with champagne and dinner was set for them so he could finally put the ring on her finger, break the news to their families and friends and enjoy their first night as an engaged couple.

Choices Characters’ Zodiac Signs: Jess

JESS (AKA “PARTY-GIRL SISTER”): LEO (JULY 23RD - AUGUST 23RD)

Since Jess and her twin Nicole (AKA “Bookish Sister”) are so different, I like to think of them as Leo-Virgo cusps, meaning they were born somewhere between August 19th and August 25th.  While analytical Nicole embodies more of Virgo’s traits, Jess is a total Leo - gregarious and social, she is the life of the party and can brighten anyone’s day.  Although she and her family members initially underestimate her ability to keep a job on the cruise ship, Jess rises to the challenge with quintessential Leo persistence and drive.  Leos are natural leaders who take pride in their work and won’t let a few obstacles get in their way.  Represented by the lion and the element fire, Leos can also be accused of having an over-inflated sense of self and taking it personally if things don’t go their way.
