Nicholas Roerich was many things – an artist, a scholar, an archaeologist, an adventurer, an editor, and a writer, to name a few. In combining all his pursuits, he wrote and introduced the world’s first “Treaty on the Protection of the Artistic and Scientific Institutions and Historic Monuments.” Roerich was nominated twice for the Nobel Peace Prize and created a philosophical school of Living Ethics. But the most interesting of his endeavors was his search for the hidden mysteries of the world, including the elusive Shangri-La.  His undying love for different folk traditions – Slavic, Indian, Tibetan – was what sparked his interest in the mysterious Shambhala. Maitreya 🙏 Tidings of the Eagle, painted in 1927, while Roerich was traveling in Urga (Ulaan Baatar), Mongolia. In his diaries, there is a passage that describes what seems to be the inspiration for this painting. He writes, “On the mountain roads to Khotan, we saw several cases that once served as abodes of Buddhist hermits. Their dark holes sometimes towered on the cliffs such that approaching them was not possible, as earthquakes had collapsed all the steps, and now… these caves were in the air, sharing their mystery only with eagles and vultures. Roerich gives us a glimpse of this inaccessible part of the mountains, and takes us back to a time when hermits lived and meditated in these remote areas. The eagle perched next to the hermit is a sacred bird, traditionally a guardian or solar figure. It’s also considered to be a messenger, like Garuda, the mythical bird in Buddhist mythology. The precise meaning of how the subject matter of this painting connects with its title has always baffled experts. Milarepa 🙏 Milarepa, the One Who Hearkened, painted in 1925 and part of Roerich’s “Banners of the East” series. During 1924-25, Roerich traveled throughout India and encountered the traditions and landscapes he would paint in the “Banners of the East” series. In his diaries, he notes: "You recall the huge mendings in the Sikhimese range, with their stone seats used by the great hermits for meditation before sunrise; the great poet Milaraspa knew the strength of the hour before dawn, and in this awesome moment his spirit merged with the great spirit of the world, in conscious unity." In this series, Roerich depicts some of the great spiritual leaders in history, both from Eastern and Western traditions. Saint Sophia Sophia—the Wisdom of the Almighty, one of Roerich’s distinctly iconographic works painted in 1932. That was the year Roerich was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for the second time, largely for his creation of the Roerich Pact, symbolized by the Banner of Peace you see Saint Sophia holding in this painting. The three circles that Saint Sophia flies through a flaming sky symbolize Art, Science, and Religion in the circle of Culture (or Past, Present and Future in the circle of Eternity). The almost grotesque use of bright orange and dirty purple conveys the chaos and confusion of war. By flying through all that with the Banner, Sophia declares the area neutral and its cultural treasures protected. Roerich took inspiration from traditional Russian Orthodox icons, and you can see how closely his version corresponds to the icon shown. Banner of Peace 🌏 The proposed banner is the symbol of whole world, not a country, but the whole civilized world. The Banner proposed has on the white background three united amaranth spheres as a symbol of Eternity and Unity. Although we don't know when this Banner will fly over all cultural monuments but undoubtedly the seed has been sprouted. Roerich Pact and Banner Of Peace. "The awareness of beauty will save the world." "Where there is peace, there is culture Where there is culture, there is peace." -Nicholas Roerich The Roerich Pact declared the necessity for protection of the cultural product and activity of the world—both during war and peace—and prescribed the method by which all sites of cultural value would be declared neutral and protected, just as the Red Cross does with hospitals. Indeed, the Roerich Pact was often called The Red Cross of Culture. Just as the Red Cross is embodied in a protective sign and banner, so does the Roerich Pact also designate a symbol to be displayed on a banner, The Banner of Peace. This Banner, flown at all sites of cultural activity and historical value, would declare them neutral, independent of combatant forces. The Banner of Peace symbol has ancient origins. Perhaps its earliest known example appears on Stone Age amulets: three dots, without the enclosing circle. But for the purposes of the Banner and the Pact, Roerich described the circle as representing the totality of culture, with the three dots being Art, Science, and Spirituality, three of the most embracing of human cultural activities. He also described the circle as representing the eternity of time, encompassing the past, present, and future. The sacred origins of the symbol, as an illustration of the trinities fundamental to all religions, remain central to the meaning of the Pact and the Banner today. In so many countries we see a deterioration of cultural values and a disregard for the right of all cultural treasures to have their own continued existence, forever protected and unimpeded. We see destruction of life, property, and the inheritance of the creative genius of the nations. One can only hope that a greater awareness of the importance of humanity’s cultural heritage will increase, rather than deteriorate.
