Maitreya 🙏 Tidings of the Eagle, painted in 1927, while Roerich was traveling in Urga (Ulaan Baatar), Mongolia. In his diaries, there is a passage that describes what seems to be the inspiration for this painting. He writes, “On the mountain roads to Khotan, we saw several cases that once served as abodes of Buddhist hermits. Their dark holes sometimes towered on the cliffs such that approaching them was not possible, as earthquakes had collapsed all the steps, and now… these caves were in the air, sharing their mystery only with eagles and vultures. Roerich gives us a glimpse of this inaccessible part of the mountains, and takes us back to a time when hermits lived and meditated in these remote areas. The eagle perched next to the hermit is a sacred bird, traditionally a guardian or solar figure. It’s also considered to be a messenger, like Garuda, the mythical bird in Buddhist mythology. The precise meaning of how the subject matter of this painting connects with its title has always baffled experts. Milarepa 🙏 Milarepa, the One Who Hearkened, painted in 1925 and part of Roerich’s “Banners of the East” series. During 1924-25, Roerich traveled throughout India and encountered the traditions and landscapes he would paint in the “Banners of the East” series. In his diaries, he notes: "You recall the huge mendings in the Sikhimese range, with their stone seats used by the great hermits for meditation before sunrise; the great poet Milaraspa knew the strength of the hour before dawn, and in this awesome moment his spirit merged with the great spirit of the world, in conscious unity." In this series, Roerich depicts some of the great spiritual leaders in history, both from Eastern and Western traditions. Saint Sophia Sophia—the Wisdom of the Almighty, one of Roerich’s distinctly iconographic works painted in 1932. That was the year Roerich was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for the second time, largely for his creation of the Roerich Pact, symbolized by the Banner of Peace you see Saint Sophia holding in this painting. The three circles that Saint Sophia flies through a flaming sky symbolize Art, Science, and Religion in the circle of Culture (or Past, Present and Future in the circle of Eternity). The almost grotesque use of bright orange and dirty purple conveys the chaos and confusion of war. By flying through all that with the Banner, Sophia declares the area neutral and its cultural treasures protected. Roerich took inspiration from traditional Russian Orthodox icons, and you can see how closely his version corresponds to the icon shown.
