Roger Willemsen was one of the most favored german intellectuals of the last decades. He wrote in the feuilletons, did TV shows (mostly about literature), and travelled a lot. The english version of this title is called "The Ends of the Earth" and the book includes twenty-two real journey reports from places all over the globe. . Different worlds end in this book. Once the landscape ends, once the life of a person, or a relationship, or even just an illusion. That sounds great, but after fifty pages I thought, oh shit, they took me in and I am actually reading a collection of short stories. That would be a no from me. But that's not it. It's an interlinked collection of trips, written in such a sophisticated way. Willemsen was honest about himself and there are many great moments and trains of thoughts. . Actually, I would have discarded some stories, to let the great ones shine more and make it more compact. Cut out some repetitions. Regardless, there where reports that made me fall deep into it. Descriptions of the life of a woman in the solitude of Patagonia, the downgraded regularity in an Indian bordell, a street in the burning Borneo that suddenly stops at a no-name village and at the end, all the different people and their connections to Roger Willemsen.
