The second annual BXBW was held in Austin, Texas during SXSW in March 2013. For those of you who aren't familiar with BXBW, it's the climax of SXSW Lit and the most significant literary event of the SXSW festival. The lineup for the event included:
Steve Roggenbuck
Timothy Willis Sanders
Elaine Sun
Chris Dankland
Mike Archibald
No Glykon
Paul Hanson Clark
Guests began their BXBW experience with a special greeting at the door from the BXBW event team.
Vegan apps and seltzer water were enjoyed by all.
The air was charged with nervous anticipation as everyone waited for the celebrity guest to arrive.
Steve prepared for his dramatic entrance.
Timothy Willis Sanders held court in the VIP section.
Chris Dankland smoked on the deck.
Mike Archibald prepared for his reading.
Paul Hanson Clark kicked things off as the reading began in "reverse Facebook order." Paul read in a emphatic, declamatory manner. He rocked back and forth and emphasized each word with hand gestures. Beach Sloth did a pretty good writeup on Paul where you can find links to his work.
No Glykon read next. No reads in a more or less 'deadpan' manner but his writing is funny, so the effect is dryly comical. He seems to write mostly short prose pieces (prose poetry?). No runs an independent publishing company out of which he publishes his literary magazine "Reality Hands." No also published "Trill," a poetry collection by Banango editor Justin Carter. No fronts a three piece spazz blast band called IBN UBO.
Mike Archibald was next up and his friend made this sweet video of Mike at SXSW. Mike read some longer poems that remind me of Allen Ginsberg. He has published a couple of ebooks: "Call the Sun" and "Make a Home of My Heart."
Chris Dankland read next. Chris runs the popular website The Neato Mosquito Alt Lit Fireworks Show. I feel like Chris works so hard to promote other writers online that people may not realize he is actually a fantastic poet himself. Everyone should check out his ebook "please please please don't get your goddamn heart broken."
The stunningly beautiful brilliant and funny Elaine Sun read after Chris. It was getting dark by this point so the pics didn't come out so well. Elaine is an twitter poet online content creator and she has published some longer form poetry that is really excellent, including an ebook titled "Above Average."
Timothy Willis Sanders followed Elaine. TWS is the author of a short story collection titled Orange Juice. His Twitter is pretty awesome although he rarely tweets, which I think is the best kind of twitter account to follow. I highly recommend checking out his blog.
Then it was time for Steve Roggenbuck to take the stage. If you haven't seen Steve read live, you need to check out his tour schedule and get to one of his readings however you can. Steve's readings are an event-- really they are more of a performance than a 'reading.' The highlight of Steve's reading for me was "somewhere in the bottom of the rain." Steve recreated his famous video of the poem, with the same music playing. It was a phenomenally moving performance of what I consider to be one of the best poems written in my lifetime by any poet anywhere.
After that, we all drank waaaaay too much seltzer water and partied late into the night. BXBW is an annual event so go ahead and mark your calendar for next March.
