A year after Paul Newman Daytona thunder, an equally legendary man’s watch goes to auction via Phillips. Steve McQueen’s 5513, which he presented to his body double stunt man Loren Janes. Now, this one has a sad story, not a jolly one as Newman’s. Mr Janes and his family had to evacuate their home during the Sand Fire in Los Angeles, leaving all their belongings (including this precious baby) to survive. While this was happening Mr Janes was also battling Alzheimer’s. So the watch had to go through a wild fire, and recovered afterwards from the ashes (and therefore, went through restoration) . This looks to me a story of persistence and will to survive, not very unlike of Mcqueen’s Papillon, don’t you think?
