Animal of the Day!

Common Pillbug (Armadillidium vulgare)

Conservation Status- Least Concern

Habitat- Europe; North America; South America

Size (Weight/Length)- 12 mm

Diet- Decaying plants

Cool Facts- With their scientific name literally having the word “armadillo” in it, it’s easy to tell what the common pillbug, or as I say roly-polies, does. When threatened, they roll into a tight ball and play dead. While this might trick predatory birds and insects, it didn’t trick five year old me when I would catch these guys by the dozen and create roly-polies farms. The mostly eat dead plant matter like leaf litter and dead wood. You’ll usually find them by flipping over a dead log or crawling across your floor at 2 in the morning.
