As a bug lover, I find sowbugs very interesting! The only land dwelling crustaceans and they choose to spend their time in my basement bedroom! So cool!

As a hater of unwelcome guests, I find sowbugs to be total assholes! Little roly poly ass looking motherfuckers and they choose to invade my personal space! So rude!

Hi I have a question about isopods, or well, specifically woodlice. Figured I'd ask here because you had the isopods care-guide. I found a few in the wild with only one antennea. Will they be okay?

They will be okay! After about two molts their antenna will have grown back. Isopods can REALLY take a beating and as long as they can reach the point where they can molt, they'll be fine.

Fun fact! Isopods molt in two sections. So sometimes it looks like they are wearing little pants as they wait for that part to molt :3

That feel when you get out of a shirt one size too small and then you gottah lay on the bed and get off your skinny jeans lol.

Finally got a picture of the sow bugs that do most of the work in the compost. It’s under a cut so no one has to see hundreds of tiny bugs or a piece of decomposing squash without wanting to see it.

They used to be hard to photograph, but now there’s so many they don’t make much effort to hide. They’re kind of tricky to remove from the finished compost so I’ve been removing some, letting it sit overnight in a shallow container to let most of them leave, and then picking the few out by hand that just didn’t want to relocate. Since they do eat plant material, I don’t really want to mix them into containers where I’m planting. This is a tiny sampling of the bin and is maybe 1/100th of the sowbugs on the surface, not counting all the ones living in the layers below.

The powder orange isopods I put in with the hissers are doing very well for themselves. I started with twelve, but now there is a nice culture going. I should start being able to seed some other tanks soon.
