Strozzapreti -Priest Chokers
A type of pasta Romagnola
The name’s mythical origins tie back to anticlerical sentiments in the region Emilia-Romagna during the Middle-Ages. The strozzapreti were allegedly given to priests and churchmen as partial payment for land rents, or offered for Sunday lunch. Most legends claim the gluttonous priests would eat it too fast and suffocate, or that the cook and/or her husband would curse the strozzapreti to choke him.
Why I relate to this pasta on an emotional level:
We originate from the same region, soooo:
if pasta could speak and I knew dialect we would be speaking the same
Pasta is a language! If the local priest would come by too often for food, people would serve him strozzapreti to signal he was overextending his welcome.
Great if you’re scared of conflicts
Match with basically any sauce -pesto, chicory and speck, gorgonzola, meat-sauce, anything you want :))
Summarised, delicious and versatile pasta with an aversion to the church
