any tips on writing Roman-inspired kingdom/country? (stratocracy type of thing)
I had Latin in my Abitur and I barely passed, so let’s see what I remember about their government.
a stratocracy is a state that is led by military
it’s not a civil administration anymore, every branch of government is occupied by military personnel
people who served in the military have more rights than others (can vote, etc.)
head of state gets a military title and often serves as commander-in-chief
the youth gets trained early in life to military standards
deep loyalty to the generals and their armies
While writing a stratocracy or a Roman-inspired state, I would look at how people get treated that did not serve in the military or that oppose it. There is also more power with the Generals than with the senate and if voting is mostly or exclusively is done by military personnel, it would lead to different decisions for the state than a civil government.
You should also think about how the children get trained and in what way and how soon they get included into the military aspect of the state. And keep in mind that while a stratocracy does not have to be autocratic, it’s more likely to use force to accomplish their goals as it’s the nature of an army.
This can also change their relationships to neighboring states, when they focus on building an army and not focussed on trading, etc. It could make the other states much more careful with them and not trying to come to a trade agreement. On the other hand, some states may try to build an exclusive alliance with them to secure themselves and get their protection.
I hope this is helpful for you and I wish you good luck!
