Every corner of Gotham holds a memory. One streetlight, the ghost of a bruise and the phantom pain of the initial strike. A faded picket fence whispering the angry yells that followed you into the night. And now, a dilapidated warehouse filled with the stench of blood and sweat.

When you left your childhood home, in tears and carrying a backpack overflowing with your most important belongings, you promised never to be trapped again. Yet, humanity is lethal in its desire, its longing for the comfort brought only by routine. Even the most painful routines become necessary, an addiction driving you to the worst parts of yourself again and again. That’s how you got here, stuck in another broken home, this one an eternal prison of your own making.

“Get out here,” Roman sighs, his black boots inches from your hand. You cower beneath his desk, hoping he’ll grow tired of this and leave. “I said get up.”

You crawl forward then, your palms stinging against the concrete floor.

“We have guests,” Roman says, as if it’s a simple reminder rather than the threat he intends it to be. He raises his hands, ignoring your flinch to straighten your top and smooth your hair. “Shall we, my love?”

“I’m not yours,” you grumble.

Roman’s hand tightens on your shoulder, his face contorting beneath the mask. “You’ll always be mine,” he reminds you lowly. He pushes you toward the door, and the ring on your finger weighs you down.

There’s a letter on your fridge held in place by your Metropolis Meteors magnet. You don’t bother to look at it; it says the same thing all the others say. Roman Sionis refuses to utter the word blackmail, but that’s what it is. Since he signed the divorce papers in front of Harvey Dent, he’s been working to ensure that his image remains intact.

Despite being divorced from one of Gotham’s most feared criminals, you continue to wear the ring, acting the part that he scares you into portraying. It’s getting heavy, another reminder of the failures and broken pieces Gotham has been collecting for your entire life.

“Where is he?” a voice demands in the darkness.

It’s not Roman, you know. Must be one of the new guys he’s been sending to ensure the letters do their job.

You open the cabinet over the sink and shrug. “No idea,” you reply softly, balancing your favorite mug in your right hand.

When you turn, expecting to hear a door or window click closed, you come face-to-face with a mask you recognize. A different mask. The mug slips from your grasp, but Red Hood steps forward, catching it easily and setting it on the counter behind you.

“We both know that’s not true,” he replies, gesturing to the ring Roman bought you.

“I-I don’t know where he is,” you whisper.

Red Hood steps back, looking around your place. “He doesn’t live here.”

“No,” you agree, leaning heavily on the counter. “I, uh, I come here when I need space or when he’s busy. But he doesn’t tell me what he’s doing. Or where he goes.”

“But you know.” Red Hood bends at his waist to sit on the edge of your couch. “You have to know.”

“I don’t,” you counter, looking down at the mug.

“Do you think that will ever change?”

Your head snaps up quickly. Who does this guy think he is? If you were going to turn on Roman – if you were brave enough to do the right thing – you would have done it already, not let some Batman wannabe talk to you into it. Yet… something about the way he speaks, how he hasn’t threatened you or acted like he doesn’t believe you, softens something deep inside you, something you thought you lost a long time ago.

“He’s dangerous,” you offer.

“I know.”

“He hurts people.”

“I know that, too. That’s why I need to find him.”

You shake your head, laughing softly at the absurdity of what you’re about to say. “You shouldn’t; he could hurt you, and that-that wouldn’t be good.”

“I can handle myself,” Red Hood argues, pushing off your couch with a sigh. “Probably don’t want to trust someone like me-“

“I trust you over him,” you interrupt, surprising yourself by the honesty.

Red Hood doesn’t speak right away. He walks to the other side of the island, his hands spread over the countertop as his helmet stares at you.

“If you turn on him, I can protect you,” he offers. “But you’d be putting a whole lot more at risk than I would.”

You inhale deeply, tapping the tea canister by your stove. Red Hood drops his hands before you admit, “I don’t have anything else left to lose.”

Jason yawns as he hooks his jacket over the doorknob. He didn’t get any sleep last night, and tonight isn’t looking promising either. After kicking his boots off, he walks into his kitchen, his lips tugging downward as he sets two small bags on his counter.

“This can’t be everything,” he grumbles.

Pulling the first bag open, he removes a newspaper-wrapped mug. It’s the one you had last night, he recognizes. Jason sighs, wondering why you consider this dish to be worth more than your life. You’d run into him two hours into tonight’s patrol, shoving the bags into his hands with a mumbled excuse about needing it out of your apartment.

Your husband is a criminal, that’s common knowledge. Jason can’t help but wonder if the drug running is the worst thing Roman Sionis has done or if, God forbid, he’s laid a hand on you. You’re like an angel that stumbled into the wrong room, and before you could do anything, your wings had been clipped and your hope shattered.

But you’re doing something now, Jason reminds himself as he pulls another wad of paper from the bag. And if you need help at the end of this, maybe he can return the favor.

“You’ve got to be kidding,” Jason complains, dropping the battered book onto his counter.

You sent a few dishes, a figurine, an empty picture frame, and a book, all wrapped in paper. Not exactly helpful.

Until Jason realizes that the newspaper isn’t recent. It’s two years old. Suddenly wide awake, Jason spreads it open, his eyes skimming the articles. He begins uncrumpling the other papers, shaking his head when he sees bank records, receipts, names, and addresses.  You’re a genius, he thinks.

The book is the outlier, he realizes. When he opens it, smooth but rushed handwriting greets him. You’ve been trying to piece together the Black Mask operation since you got involved, he finds. Jason may have a chance to help you, but he’ll still be in debt for what you’ve offered him tonight.

Red Hood taps his fingers on his thigh, his mask angled away from you. Sitting on a roof outside the Narrows, you take a sip of your drink, then lean back against the cinder block wall behind you.

“What are they doing?” you whisper.

“Recon,” Red Hood answers simply. “Trying to get information about anything that’s happening soon.”

“So, you know when to do… whatever,” you deduce, waving your hand as you speak.

Jason smiles beneath the mask, turning toward you as he nods. “Yeah. Whatever.”

Your lips pick up at the corners as he jokes. Red Hood is an anti-hero; though you’re not entirely sure what that means in Gotham, you know that he’s dichotomous; there’s gray in everything, and he’s going to find it. Despite that truth, Red Hood is the first person you’ve met in your entire life who cares and does the right thing simply for the sake of doing it. His methods might not be traditional, but he cares, and he’s stopping a bad person from doing more bad things.

“Hood,” you begin carefully, looking down at your empty ring finger. “Do you think-“

You trail off, pinching your brows as you look out over the roof.

“Do I think?” he presses.

Pulling your knees toward your chest, you murmur, “Someone’s here.”

He leaps to his feet quickly, moving with more agility than you expected from someone his size. When he moves to stand before you, you’re struck by how imposing he is. You feel perfectly safe as he turns, stepping with purpose.

“That’s the wrong mask,” someone calls.

“You got something to say, come say it!” Red Hood barks.

The man laughs as he steps out onto the roof, closer to you than you’d like. You’ve seen him before, the last time Roman sent him to break into your home and scare you into complacency.

“I’m not here for you, Hood,” the man states, glaring at you. “Your husband would like me to escort you home.”

“You know him?” Hood asks lowly.

You push yourself up, shaking your head as you reply, “Goon.”

Jason rolls his eyes beneath the mask. “Tell her husband that if he wants something, he can come get it himself.”

“You don’t want me to do that.”

“Alright,” Red Hood answers. “Let’s do this.” He lunges forward before he finishes speaking, and you move until your back is against the wall, your hand clamped over your mouth as you try not to watch but can’t bear to look away.

Roman’s goon bends his knees, pressing his hands toward Red Hood’s shoulders in a poor attempt to remain upright. Red Hood’s arm wraps around the man’s ribs, forcing the air out of his lungs before he tips backward, his back colliding with the asphalt roof covering. The sharp crack of his body against the hard surface makes you flinch, your fingers digging into your cheek as you watch.

The goon squirms on the ground, hooking his ankle around Red Hood’s calf. Red Hood buckles, dropping to one knee before he swings his arm in a wide arc, his fist colliding painfully with the man’s unprotected jaw.

“You’re dead, Hood,” the man grunts, bringing his knee up toward Red Hood’s stomach.

Red Hood flips, catching himself on his feet as the man scrambles toward the edge of the roof, pulling himself to stand.

“Just tell me where Black Mask is, and I’ll let you walk away,” Red Hood offers.

His hand inches toward his jacket, and you lower your hand, taking half a step forward.

“I’ve got a job,” the man replies.

“Should’ve taken the deal.”

They run toward each other at the same time, their sides to you as they throw punches. For every punch Red Hood takes, he lands two. Red Hood steps back toward the edge of the roof, and your breath catches in your throat.

Before Roman’s employee can react, Red Hood brings his leg up, chambers it at hip level, then twists into a kick. His boot connects with the man’s chin and nose, sending him stumbling backward as his hands rise to hold his face.

Red Hood lands lithely, stepping forward to grasp the man’s jacket in his hands. He shoves him against a partial brick wall, leaning into him.

The man groans in pain, his blood-soaked hands falling away from his face. Red Hood leans in, and though you can’t hear what they’re saying, you can see the man’s mouth moving rapidly. When he stops talking, Red Hood straightens, smoothing the man’s jacket.

You exhale shakily, convinced that the fight is over. Red Hood reaches into his pocket, and the semi-automatic pistol he withdraws shines in the moonlight. The shot is muffled, but you watch the man slump, unmoving as Red Hood slides the gun into his pocket and steps back. As if it’s all in a day’s work.

“Where is your ring?” Red Hood asks, rolling his wrist as he returns to your side.

“I- Are you okay?” you mutter, staring at his helmet rather than the body behind him.

“Where is your ring?” he demands, his voice firmer.

You pull your wedding ring from your pocket and drop it into his palm. Blinking at him, you silently ask what he’s doing. Red Hood looks down at the diamond, then shakes his head. His long fingers curl around the ring before he steps back. Suddenly, the space between you seems different, more final.

“Go home,” he sighs.

“You’re hurt,” you argue, stepping toward him.

Red Hood’s shoulders stiffen as he extends his arm, pointing toward the fire escape. “Go. Home.”

You swallow and step back, putting distance between yourself and the man who saved your life.

“This was stolen,” he adds, lifting the hand holding your ring.

“Okay,” you murmur, grasping the cool metal railing of the staircase. “I- I’m sorry.”

Red Hood looks away from you, and you think he isn’t going to speak again. But then he calls, “Be careful. This isn’t over.”

“You too,” you reply, smiling at his back before you race down the steps to get home.

The television is dark as you stare at it. It’s been nearly twenty-six hours since you last saw Red Hood, since you witnessed what he did to protect you. Curling your fingers around a Batman mug you bought at the thrift store months ago, you draw your knees up, relishing the warmth of the cup.

Your apartment was a safe space for a very short time before Roman broke in the first time. Now, in complete silence and surrounded by darkness, you feel alone. Too alone. You wish you had a way to contact Red Hood, to tell him that you’re sorry for last night, to tell him that you care about him, to ask him… to ask him anything, really.

A shadow drifts across the room, likely a cloud passing over the moon. But the shadow returns too quickly, the extended silhouette of a man plunging your living room into even more darkness.

“It’s unlocked,” you call without moving.

The door squeaks as it slides open, then a heavy shoe lands on your floor before the door closes and the lock clicks.

“You have to lock the door,” the newcomer sighs.

You shrug, looking at the unimpressed look on the painted ceramic Batman’s face. “Doesn’t do much good. People still get in,” you explain.

Red Hood sighs. He walks toward you, then sits on your couch. His hand is mere inches from your leg, and even without touching him, you feel better because he’s here. He has that effect on you everywhere, it seems.

“Roman paid me a visit,” he begins.

You sit up straighter, your eyes dropping as if you could see any injuries he may have.

“He said someone stole your ring and knew it had to have been a bat.” Red Hood glances toward you as he adds, “He’s under the impression you wouldn’t let someone rob you, so you must have given it away.”

You blow out an amused breath. “He sends people to rob me every chance he gets.”

Red Hood lifts his hands, then freezes when you sigh.

“I’m sorry,” you offer softly.

“For what?” he questions.

“That you had to do that, for putting you in a position where you had to protect me.”

His hands continue their journey then, and you watch breathlessly as he removes the helmet. A black domino mask hides his eyes and much of his upper face, but you can see enough.

“Are you listening?” he asks.

You nod, trying to take in his beauty as he speaks.

“You are worth protecting,” he says. “I told you before that I would protect you.”

“I know,” you murmur.

“And I can tell that you aren’t used to it. But you helped me, and I’m not going to walk away. I am going to do whatever it takes to keep you safe and to take down Black Mask’s operation. In that order, okay?”

He leans toward you as he speaks, and when you manage to agree, “Okay,” he’s close enough that you can smell his cologne, occluded slightly by the scents of metal and gunpowder.

“Thank you for trusting me,” you whisper.

“You earned it,” Red Hood replies, a small smile gracing his face. “Everything you’ve given me has helped.”

“If I can do anything else-“

“You can lock the door, for starters.”

Smiling, you nod. “I can do that.”

“And if you see Roman again… keep doing exactly what you’ve been doing.”

Red Hood leaves a few minutes later, his helmet in place and the door locked behind him. You feel better after seeing him, and you realize he’s the first person who has ever made you feel like this: important, worthy, safe.

That’s what makes it harder to get a visit from Roman the next night. And it makes it nearly impossible to keep your out-of-the-loop, uninterested act up when he tells you he finally beat Red Hood at his own game. When he leaves, you press your face into a pillow and cry; Red Hood is here because of you, and you can’t even check on him.

 “You good?” Red Hood asks, his fingers on the deadbolt as he checks the door.

The moment he turns, you throw your arms over his shoulders, pressing yourself against him as you bury your face in the juncture of his neck and shoulder. He raises a hand awkwardly, tapping your back as he murmurs that you’re okay.

You shake your head against him, and his arm lowers to wrap around your waist. He guides you carefully toward the couch, but you cling to him rather than sitting.

“I’m sorry,” you breathe out. “I’m so sorry.”

“For what?” he questions.

You pull back enough to see him, your brows furrowed as you answer, “What Roman did to you.”

“What Roman-? I haven’t seen him since the ring incident. Speaking of which, you’re never getting that back. Extracting the tracker was a little more devastating than I expected.”

“He said- wait, tracker?”

Red Hood sighs, his hands gentle on your waist as he pushes you back a step. He removes his helmet, then rubs his thumb against his chin.

“What are we discussing first?” he asks.

You appreciate the bluntness, so you smile and say, “Roman. He came over here last night and said he’d finally beaten you at your own game.”

“He’s trying to figure out if you know me,” Red Hood explains. “Same thing with the ring; he’s attempting to synthesize the slivers of information he has.”

“So, he didn’t hurt you?”

“No.” Red Hood takes your hand and promises, “I’m okay.”

You nod, too focused on his touch to bring up the other topic of the tracker in your wedding ring. In hindsight, you should have suspected that the size of the diamond was evidence of an ulterior motive.

Red Hood shakes his head, his thumb brushing across your hand. The moonlight reflects off the white eyes of his domino mask, highlighting the beauty you noticed before. Standing here tonight, you’re ready to admit to yourself that you’re falling in love with Red Hood. Something about the way he’s looking at you, his gentle touches, makes you think you’re not alone in the feeling.

You lift your other hand to Red Hood’s shoulder. He welcomes your touch, so you lean in. At the last second, just as your eyes drift closed, he turns away. Your lips brush his jaw rather than his mouth, and you jerk back immediately, pulling your hand from his.

“I…” you begin, but don’t know what else to say. “I’m sorry.”

Red Hood takes a step back, his jaw tense where you kissed him. He exhales but doesn’t speak. He doesn’t even look at you.

“I’ve never met someone like you,” you admit softly. “I just thought there was something there.”

“I want to help you,” Red Hood offers, his words slow and measured. “And I want to stop Black Mask, but I can’t do this.”

You blink, willing yourself not to cry. It’s not like you’re losing something good. You’ve never had it to lose. “Why not?”

“Why not?” Red Hood repeats. “Because you’re married to the man I’m planning to ruin.”

It makes sense that the idea is his problem with this. He’s not willing to play a role in cheating. The first tear runs over your cheek, and you don’t bother to wipe it away. It’s your fault for getting involved with Roman. If you’d done the right thing for yourself once or twice in your life, maybe you’d have a chance with Red Hood, with someone good.

“I think I’m falling in love with you,” you whisper through the tears.

“You love the idea of me,” Red Hood argues, his voice kind even as your heart shatters.

“I can count on one hand the number of good people I’ve met, and you are the best of them. What did you expect to happen when you kept showing up to check on me?”

“Your feelings are not my fault,” he counters.

“Of course not but are you honestly telling me that you don’t feel anything?” you demand.

“It doesn’t matter!” Hood snaps. “Because you are married to Black Mask and I’m not going to put you in danger by-“

“I’m not married to him!” you interrupt, your chest heaving as tears stream down your cheeks.

Red Hood stops, his arms rigid at his sides as he looks at you. You nod, shaking your head as you look down at the floor.

“It took everything I had to convince him to sign the papers,” you confess, your vision blurry with tears. “And then he sent the first threat. If I didn’t keep up the act, if I told anyone that I’d left him, he was… he was going to do something terrible to me.”

“How…” Red Hood trails off, then says, “Harvey Dent.”

You nod, your bottom lip between your teeth. You should probably apologize again, you know, but if you speak again, you might tell him more that you shouldn’t divulge.

“I guess that makes this a little easier,” Red Hood mumbles.

You look up to ask what he means by that, but then his gloved hands are on either side of your face, and his lips are against yours. Nothing else in the world matters now, and no one can get to you, not with Red Hood beside you. Or hovering on top of you, when he leads you to the couch.

Red Hood is in your kitchen when you wake the morning after your confession. His back is to you, his dark hair messy from sleeping on your couch. You would have insisted he take the bed if you’d known he’d been there.

“Why’d you stay?” you question, waiting at the end of the hall.

“I didn’t,” he answers. “I left and came back.”

“Oh. Why?”

“To check if you locked the door behind me,” he jokes. “And because I had an idea.”

“To make me breakfast?”

“No, that was a bonus.”

You wait for him to tell you more, but he doesn’t. He moves to the stove, then turns to open the fridge. His domino mask is still in place, but he looks softer like this, his boots placed neatly by the door, his jacket and gloves folded beside them.

“The idea?” you question.

Red Hood nods, lowering the temperature of the burner so he can turn to you without worrying about the food burning.

“I’ve got an idea to lure Black Mask into making a move before he’s ready,” he explains.

“Okay. How?”

“I was thinking,” he hums. He raises a hand to the side of your neck, brushing his thumb behind your ear. “Something like this.”

“But we’re-“

Red Hood shakes his head. “He doesn’t know what I know. So, if he thinks that I’m okay with the idea of pursuing something that’s his… he’ll have no choice but to come after me.”

“No,” you reply, stepping back from his touch. “Absolutely not.”

“Why not?” Hood wonders, watching you intently.

“Because making him angry is not a plan, it’s a death wish!”

“He-“

“He is volatile and dangerous and mean, Hood, and I’m not going to be part of a plan that could get you killed.”

“I won’t be alone,” he adds, keeping his distance. “Neither of us will be.”

“What if it’s not enough?” you question, terrified of the answer.

Red Hood offers his calloused and scarred hand. You don’t hesitate to take his hand, placing your entire life in it.

Roman texts you two words: Base. Now.

You show the text to Red Hood, who nods. He pulls a device from his pocket, his tongue peeking past his lips as he taps the screen.

“I’m going to be with you the whole time,” Red Hood reminds you. “And if you need help that I can’t give, just yell.”

“Okay,” you agree, clutching his hand tightly. “I trust you.”

He kisses your temple, then leads you into Roman’s warehouse. Not the base where you’re supposed to meet, but the warehouse where he already is.

“Roman,” you call, stepping into the office.

“What are you doing here?” he snaps, standing to close the door behind you.

“I, uh, I was in the area and thought I’d check here before I went to the base.”

“Where did I tell you to go?”

“The base,” you whisper, hooking your fingers together. “I’m sorry.”

“You know, you say that a lot for someone who keeps messing up.”

A rapid, unexpected burst of gunfire draws your attention, and Roman surges forward, slamming your back against the door. You whimper when the metal door handle collides with your hip, but Roman poses much more danger than an inanimate door.

“Who did you lead here?” he seethes, pressing the mask toward your face.

“I- I- no one, Roman.”

“It sounds like someone.”

“Ah, I’m flattered,” a third voice interjects.

You glance up, your eyes widening when you see Red Hood aiming an RPG at the window separating him from Roman. He wouldn’t do anything to hurt you, you know, but the size and sheer presence of the weapon make it easy to look surprised.

“I should have known,” Roman grumbles, sliding his fingers up to grip the roots of your hair. He jerks you forward, then opens the door. Walking out, he holds you in front of him like a human shield. Coward, you think. “So, you’ve decided to take a greater interest in what’s mine,” Roman accuses.

“Well, some things deserve better than a heartless criminal, don’t you think?” Red Hood taunts.

“You can’t use that,” Roman brags, wrapping his arm around your throat to keep you close. “Not unless you want to kill us both.”

“Do it,” you urge, nodding your permission to Red Hood. If it frees Gotham from Roman’s reign, you find you might be okay with tonight being the end.

“Better idea,” Batman calls from somewhere in the warehouse. His voice carries, so you can’t tell where he is.

Roman jerks backward, looking around wildly. His arm loosens, so Red Hood steps forward and pulls you away from him. Tucked safely behind his back, you don’t bother to look at Roman again. Red Hood drops the rocket launcher, the strap around his shoulder catching it before it hits the ground. With one hand securely in yours, he extends his pistol toward Roman.

“You think I’m here alone?” Roman laughs. “You think I’m that inept?”

“I think a lot of things,” Red Hood replies. “And I didn’t come alone either. Your people are busy; they aren’t going to come fight this battle for you. So, what’s it gonna be?”

He releases your hand, and you heed his instruction. You run. There’s a helipad across the street, that’s where Red Hood told you to meet him, so that’s where you go. The sound of fighting and gunfire follows you all the way, but there isn’t a siren to be heard in Gotham.

Inside the warehouse, the scent of blood and sweat intensifies as Nightwing engages two foes at once. There were a dozen men inside, based on his and Red Robin’s recon, and three of them are already down. Red Hood is in another area, one-on-one with Roman. Dick hadn’t bothered to ask why it was so important to finish Black Mask tonight, but he trusted there was a good reason.

“Easier,” Batman barks as Robin wipes blood from his katana.

“The imbecile had a warrant for sexual assault, Father. If he has no knowledge of the word, perhaps my vocabulary was affected by his overwhelming failure to be decent,” Robin replies.

“Monologue,” Nightwing and Red Robin chide.

Batman throws a batarang as Nightwing taps his escrima sticks together. The fight moves quickly, Black Mask’s goons failing to stop their plan. A gunshot rings through the building, and the bats know it isn’t Red Hood’s gun.

“You missed,” Jason taunts, tapping Roman’s back before he flips into the shadows. Learning all the moves from Dick had been fun as a kid, slightly torturous post-pit, but wholly worth it now. Watching Roman fidget, unsure where a man the size of Red Hood is, is entertaining, to say the least.

“I see why you want to keep her close,” Jason sighs, cocking his guns as he leans on a metal pillar and watches Roman aim the gun senselessly. “She’s special.”

Roman fires blindly, his back to Jason. “That’s my wife!” he screams.

“Really?”

“You son-“

“Of a bat,” Jason finishes. “C’mon, Roman, give it up before I have to drag your body out of here.”

“I thought you were a good guy!” Roman calls. “Didn’t shoot from the dark or steal people’s wives!”

Red Hood steps out of the shadows, spreading his empty hands as he invites, “You claim to be a man, fight me like one. But we both know you’re not what you claim to be.”

Roman takes a careful step toward Jason and then drops heavily onto the floor. Jason stares at him for several seconds, then lifts his boot and taps the steel toe against Roman’s temple.

“You’re welcome,” Robin calls from somewhere far above them. “Tranquilizer. Got it from my grandfather.”

Jason wants to argue, say he had it under control, but he has somewhere to be. “Thanks, kid,” he mumbles before he runs out into the night.

The collapse of Black Mask’s empire is today’s big news in Gotham and beyond, from the front page of the Gazette to the Daily Planet in Metropolis. Jason shuts the car off, then pulls a duffel bag from the passenger seat as he exits the car. The safe house is practically invisible, impossible to find unless you know where to look and are actively looking. There was no way you were going to sleep with this guy tonight - the last blind date you’d been set up on was a disaster from start to finish, and you had little faith that tonight would be any different. You’d accepted the setup when your friend had pushed the point, but only so you could agree that this was the last time you’d let her set you up. 

This guy seemed so excited about planning the perfect Valentine’s date when you were texting him to plan your evening, offering up a few different ideas for things you could do. It was kinda cute; you’d never seen a guy put so much effort into planning a date before, and you hadn’t even met the guy yet.

You’d settled on a screening of Dirty Dancing at the rooftop cinema near Hollywood Hills, and your date had told you he’d take care of the booking for it. The movie choice had surprised you, but you weren’t complaining - it was one of your favourites. 

You told him you’d text him when you got there so you could find each other. He’d let you know that he’d be wearing dark green, but with how busy it would be there tonight you’d agreed that it would just be easier to find each other when you got there. 

You stepped out of the Uber, pulling your cardigan around you as the chill hit your skin. You moved towards the entrance of the building, pulling your phone out of your purse to text your date.

His hair was dark and fell in soft looking curls, the shade matching his dark eyes. He had a nose that could make a roman statue jealous. He was looking around, much the same as you. 

Must be looking for his partner. No guy that looked like that stayed single for long. 

His eyes met yours for a moment, and you felt your skin heat, looking away. You should be looking for your date, not checking out this stranger. 

You looked down at your phone again, finding a new message.

You looked up, meeting the man’s eyes again. 

No fucking way. 

No one else matching that outfit description was nearby. Your date must be this man. You lifted a hand in an awkward wave, and his eyes lit up, a smile stretching across his face.

You started walking towards him, and he headed to you, meeting you in the middle. 

“Hi! Are you Ella’s friend by any chance?” He asked, voice warm yet hesitant.

“I am,” You say happily, free to admire him a little more now you knew that he was your date. You tell him your name.

“It’s nice to finally meet you. I am Javi.” He introduced himself. You walked together to the terrace, taking in the view and exchanging small talk to get to know each other.

“I hope you don’t mind - I booked the loveseat option. It seemed like the most comfortable seating.” He explained, and you shook your head, smiling. 

“Not at all! That sounds perfect.” 

“Good, that’s good… Would you like to get a drink?” 

“Sure.” 

You lined up together at the bar, getting a round of spicy margaritas, finding a table near an outdoor heater to chase away the chill of the evening. 

“Have you seen the movie before?” You asked, sipping at your marg and watching Javi across the table as he tried his drink. 

“This is delicious,” he said, his lips curling into a smile as he savoured tha taste. “Sorry, yes, I have. It’s actually one of my favourite movies. I’m a bit of a movie fan.” He admitted with a wry grin. 

“No way, it’s one of my favourites too! It’s practically a comfort movie for me at this point.” You were pleasantly surprised that he valued a romance movie - in your experience, men usually treated romance like a lesser, “female” genre. It was refreshing.

“Oh, me too.” He admitted conspiratorially. “They don’t make romance movies like this anymore.” 

“They really don’t,” You agreed, “I haven’t seen a good romance or romantic comedy in years. It’s like Hollywood collectively decided it wasn’t worth trying anymore. I wish someone would write one like the classics again.” 

Javi nodded in agreement. “Exactly! The whole genre has been reduced to those made-for-Netflix movies, it’s lost something.”

You nodded in agreement, enjoying his passion for the topic, and you wondered suddenly if he was in the film industry or just a big movie fan like he’d said.

You sat in comfortable silence with each other for a moment, each sipping at your drinks and making fleeting eye contact. 

“So, what do you do for a living?” You asked.

“Uh, actually, I’m a writer.”

“Oh, that’s so cool! What kind of writing?” 

“Screenplays, actually.” 

Your suspicion was right, then. 

“Well then, maybe you can write the next big romance.” You said, making him grin. 

“Not a bad idea,” He agreed. “What is it that you do for a living?”

You told him what your work situation looked like currently, and what you’d studied, which led to you both discussing your goals and plans. You found that you had a lot in common. When you asked Javi if he’d written any screenplays you might know, he confessed that he wrote Nic Cage’s last big blockbuster.

“No fucking way, that was you? I loved that movie!” 

“Oh, thankyou,” he held a hand to his chest in sincerity. “It was a lot of fun to write. Nic and I are great friends now, and the movie is actually a retelling of how we met.” 

“But the movie is wild!” 

“Yes, it was an eventful week.” Javi said wryly, finishing his margarita. “Shall we get another drink and then find our seat? The movie will be starting soon.” 

“Sure, but I’m going to need you to tell that story later.”

Javi grinned, promising he would, his hand finding the small of your back as you headed to the bar. This time you ordered some warm mulled wine to help keep you warm, taking your drinks with you to the theatre area. 

The theatre was open air, on the rooftop of the building, a large projector screen set against the backdrop of the city lights. Outdoor heaters were evenly spaced around the seating, and there were stacks of blankets and cushions available at the end of each aisle. 

“I can’t believe I’ve never been here.” You admitted, taking it all in. “This is so cool.” 

“It’s actually my first time here too, a friend recommended it to me.” Javi said, grabbing a blanket with his free hand as you both headed to your seat. He hesitated for a moment, standing by the stack, gesturing to the pile in askance. “Would you like your own or would you like to share one?” 

“I’m fine to share if you are.” You said, a flirtatious smile pulling at your lips. To be honest, you’d be a little disappointed if he didn’t want to share. You were looking forward to a reason to be closer to him. 

“Definitely.” He smiled, setting his drink down on the side table to unfold the blanket. 

Soon, you were both tucked under the blanket on the loveseat, sipping at the mulled wine and waiting for the movie to start. 

The movie started playing, and you felt yourself relax into the seat. “God I love the soundtrack for this movie.” 

“You like the classics? Me too!” 

“They just hit different.”

“I get exactly what you mean.” 

You settled in to watch the movie together. Javi wasn’t big on talking during the movie, which suited you just fine - you hated when people talked during movies, especially in a cinema. 

Javi was attentive, though. He noticed when you were getting cold, offering for you to come closer and share his warmth, lifting his arm in invitation, careful not to let the cold air under the blanket. 

You took him up on it immediately, scooting closer, and he slung a warm arm over your shoulder, holding you to his side. He smelled so good, and the feel of his warm, solid body against yours was making it hard for you to pay attention to the movie. At least you’d seen it enough to know it by heart anyway. 

“Is that better?” He murmured quietly into your hair, and your skin tingled, a trail of warmth buzzing down your spine.

“Much.” You smiled up at him, longing to press a kiss to his jaw, and digging your fingernails into your leg to rein the urge in.

You walked to the parking lot together, hand in hand, giggling like teenagers as you passed his vape pen back and forth. He’d invited you back to his place to watch another movie, and it was probably a line, but you found you didn’t mind at all. He’d texted his driver (he had a driver?!) to let them know that he was ready to be picked up, and you’d decided to wait outside together, away from the crowd near the building. 

He’d long since draped his coat over your shoulders, despite your protests that he’d be cold without it. “Not to worry, cariño,” He’d reassured you with a cheeky wink. “I run hot.” 

When the car arrived, you’d been happy to realise that it wasn’t a limo, just a large SUV. Javi was obviously wealthy, you’d gleaned that much since you met him, but it showed in the quality of his clothing and accessories, it wasn’t something he was flaunting tackily. 

He held the door open for you, making sure you were comfortably inside before closing it for you and rounding to the other side. He greeted his driver warmly, instructing them to head back to his house, which he’d told you wasn’t too far away. 

When you got back to his house, he led you to a room with soft, comfortable couches and a small bar. You made some drinks together, and Javi put in an order for some takeout while you found a movie to watch together. 

You settled on an easy-to-watch comedy, something you didn't have to concentrate on, so you could talk more. So far, you had to admit that your friend had done good with Javi. He was friendly, funny, and downright gorgeous. 

When the moment presented itself two movies later, as you were both rummaging through the walk in pantry for some movie snacks, you didn’t hesitate to kiss him. Personally, I believe Annabeth as a character devolves as the series progresses, and her worst character flaws are somehow never addressed. The worst is this sense of codependency she projects on Percy.

The Fandom, for some reason, has her put on a pedestal even though it's Percy who gets himself out of most trouble, who makes the most strategies, and takes the most efforts. Even Rick's demigod life updates say Percy scores higher in studies than Annabeth.

Yet for someone reason everyone degrades Percy while they worship Annabeth. Nothing ticks me off more. The only thing Annabeth has on Percy is her extensive knowledge and nothing else, yet every character behaves as if Percy would be nothing without Annabeth. Nothing nothing could be more wrong.

The Fandom is so eager to call out every character's flaws, yet Annabeth's are never addressed. The toxic and possessive way she acted throughout the Battle of Labyrinth towards Percy, treating him as if she owned him and her repulsive behavior towards Rachel, should have been Percy's greatest Red flag.

Not to mention Percy gets taken to Romans, his memories taken and altered by Hera left to fend off for himself and Annabeth shows no lick of understanding or supportiveness to Percy's troubles not just then but ever.

Not only that, she had the blatant audacity to criticize Percy for leaving her as if it were a choice on his part.

Annabeth literally spends the start of The Last Olympian in which Percy is dealing with the immense pressure of his looming death and the fate of the world being oh his shoulders and she is neither supportive nor understanding when he is reasonably panicking but also instead gets mad at him.

All in all, Annabeth spends the entirety of their relationship complaining, projecting unreal expectations on Percy, being controlling and toxically possessive.

I could rant all day about it, but essentially, Percy's first intimate connection with any woman other than his mother was with Annabeth.

Everyone knows Percy's deep deep seated self esteem issues, so in his mind Annabeth is too good for him, and he doesn't deserve her. Annabeth should be proving to Percy how awesome and great he is, how they both are equally deserving of each other instead of further worsening his self-esteem.

But Percy is so afraid of losing her that he goes by whatever she says. Rick himself literally writes how relaxed and better Percy feels with Rachel yet never mentions it ever again.

I agree that Annabeth was understandably terrified in Tartarus but by what right does she make Percy promise to not use a power he would obviously need for self defense, a power that just got them out alive from a Primordials clutches?

There's not one thing Annabeth has done that is truly selflessly for Percy. Yes she took a knife for him which is very good of her but honestly are you telling me anyone who has traveled with Percy for so long for whose sake Percy has frequently risked his own life wouldn't do the same?

Aside from that one action, Annabeth has never never done anything purely out of consideration of Percy's comfort , his trauma, and his insecurities.

She plays by fear as Percy says he has a healthy fear of her. There's no such thing as healthy fear. No healthy relationships should contain a hint of fear.

So yes Percy can't say no to her because he fears no one would love him if Annabeth doesn't, he never wants to lose her believing her to be the only person that would accept him despite all his flaws. And these delusions make him agree to everything Annabeth says. This is both wildly untrue and extremely toxic and unhealthy in a relationship.
