the other day i read an exposed post about a twitter rp - idolizehq. i just happen to be featured on the post, and i figured that it's only fair that i have a chance to retaliate. i want to start off by saying that i, in no way, am trying to speak for the roleplay (idolize) as a whole. this is me, mallory, speaking on my opinion of the situation. i dont want ANYONE to get this confused with the rp bashing, @romancvndles opinions/feelings.
to start off, we're going to discuss about the point of twitter roleplay as a whole, twitter rp was introduced as an easier way for rpers to interact and still do what they love since not everyone had the time to put the work into actual roleplaying on tumblr. this means of course you're going to get a crazy amount of diversity, some people are just going to click and some people aren't. which is a given, right? apparently not. this whole appless twitter rp thing started some time back, i remember the transitions. when there was just a few prestigious twitter rps. not half of the work was put into the roleplays back then, it was just something quick and easy. but as time progressed people started to prefer twitter over tumblr, because clearly it was more convenient. the first real rp i joined was around june/july of 2014, when the whole concept was still pretty new. of course the whole thing was nice and welcoming, i went into the rp knowing absolutely no one and this was a really refreshing feeling.
over time and as the rp started to die out there were cliques formed, so when they revamped the roleplay the "originals" stayed closer. this doesnt seem completely unreasonable right? everyone still talked and plotted with the new people who came and went, we just knew each other for longer so there were inside jokes and things that other people just wouldn't get. and as the twitter rps developed, the admins started taking the whole thing a lot more serious, putting a lot of time and energy into promoting and making sure that the whole twitter experience runs smoothly for the most amount of people possible. but then again, twitter roleplay isnt for everyone.
some people have a thing called dark humor, i know that i - myself, have dark humor so absolutely repulsive things, for others, make me laugh. if you've read the fake demi lovato meet and greet horror story (https://twitter.com/shedissinme/status/532065469587804161), then you'll notice that fat is used as a joke. this is just something that clearly a lot of people find funny. if you don't? thats not anyone else's fault, truly. now clearly this isnt a post that will make everyone have a little laugh but i'll say it again, its funny to some people. like i talked about when rps die out the characters (or muns) begin to form a bond. thats what happened here, a bunch of old friends (and new) had some inside jokes, that i'll admit were sensitive for those who had problems with the topic. but anyone would know that interacting with the human race, leaves them with opportunity to be triggered. i struggle with body image issues too, because i’m a teenage girl with pictures of people with great bodies all the time, and if i do ever feel triggered with the word fat i’ll just mute the person or even block them but i won’t make it so that no one can have fun anymore.
these people get on twitter roleplays to play a character, c'mon guys. and yes, some people ooc in no way condone the act of calling one another a degrading name. people are playing a character. i dont think i could say that enough times. some people are their own muse, and sometimes people are playing someone completely different to who they really are.
at the end of the day admins can only do so much, if some of the muns aren’t listening to the admin, that not on the admin, thats not on the roleplay. that is solely on the mun. and i will take full responsibility for saying fat, and i am not proud that it triggered someone but i will not apologize for playing my character the same way i’ve played any other character since the first roleplay i have ever joined.
twitter rp =/= a place where triggering jokes are made even after you ask them to stop.
twitter rp = a place where people play reckless, problematic characters.
