Love Wedding Repeat

Love Wedding Repeat is a 2020 romantic comedy film directed by Dean Craig. It stars Sam Claffin, Olivia Munn and Joel Fry. The film is about a wedding where a brother must do everything in his power to make sure his sister’s wedding goes smoothly as various factors may allow it to go horribly wrong.

In a relatively dry period for the film industry given the coronavirus and various movies either shifting their release dates or simply not giving in to digital releases, here we are with a little British romantic comedy. I love a good romantic comedy, but good ones tend to be far between nowadays. So, is Love Wedding Repeat any good? I’d say it’s actually pretty enjoyable, actually. I don’t really understand the negative reviews. Love Wedding Repeat is an enjoyable British comedy that manages to make you laugh throughout it’s entire duration with some really good comedic moments. Sam Claffin explores his inner slapstick and he’s actually pretty funny in this film. The film is more of a comedy and less of a romantic comedy though.

Let’s begin with the positives.

Firstly, script. A majority of the audience will not enjoy the humor in this film. But if you’re like me and you’re into dry, sarcastic British humor, then this is the film for you. I had quite alot of laughs with it and laughed more than I have laughed in a romantic comedy in ages. It’s down to the script and the performances.

However, I do have a few negatives.

Mainly, romance. Sam Claffin and Olivia Munn do make a decent couple, so I’m not really sure why we didn’t explore more of their romantic connection or chemistry than we did. Instead, we’re spending a bit too much time on side plots or comedic moments that should’ve been spent on establishing what makes the relationship between these two so special. The ending would have had a better pay-off if this aspect was focused on more.

To conclude, despite the lack of focus on the romantic relationship of the film, for the most part I did really enjoy this small British romantic comedy. It won’t be for everyone. Those who are accustomed to the traditional American romantic comedy will definitely not understand quite alot of the humor in this film. However, if you love British humor, then this little rom-com just might be the one for you. Love Wedding Repeat receives an 6.8/10.
