they became friends bc regulus caught peter smoking weed outside the herbology classroom and promised to never say anything if peter shared his joint with him

so they start smoking together whenever they have free time, or during their study breaks (the marauders are permanently confused on why peter decided to care abt his divination marks all of a sudden)

and they end up having deep chats abt how regulus doesn’t really give a shit about blood purity but that’s what he’s been brought up to believe in so it’s hard to unlearn what’s now unconscious behavior.

how peter feels like he’s not as good as his friends and how he feels like everyone sees him as the ‘extra’ to the marauders that they bring along due to pity.

cue the sexuality crisis of an average teen.

peter isn’t sure what being queer actually means, he just assumed he’s straight because what else is there?? and well if he took a peak at gilderoy lockhart without a shirt on, that was his own business.

and while regulus has always known sort of that he’s gay, he’s just not willing to accept it unless he actually tries something (internalized homophobia king). but he can’t try because if his family found out, he’d be worse off than sirius was when he was disowned

(sirius had a loving home waiting for him, regulus does not)

so regulus and peter make a weed laden promise to be each other’s first kiss, to just know yk?

and they do, and it’s beautiful. but it’s an awkward, ‘you should never kiss the friend you’ve learnt to see as a sibling’ kind of kiss.

but it’s beautiful all the same, because despite what they may have thought, they don’t hate it and their friend is actually quite a good kisser.

flash forward to maybe 3 years later,

established gilderat (or partyvan) and moonwater (or jegulus, OR moonwaterchaser) and it gets brought up in a trivial game of truth or drink.

and boy oh boy, not only is sirius about to go into a catatonic state, but remus and james are SEETHING, not in a ‘pete, a word.’ way

more like a ‘i can’t believe you’ve made out with my husband and now i can’t stop thinking about the fact that he has touched someone else and now i have to establish dominance so you KNOW you will never be able to compete with me’ silly way.

and peter and regulus find this HILARIOUS. gilderoy’s honestly just there for the ride, boy’s got such an inflated ego that the fact that peter kisses regulus doesn’t even register in his head.

meanwhile regulus is trying to fiend off two overly clingy, man child husbands who dont want to let him go because all of a sudden they’re second guessing whatever the fuck happens when reg goes to peter’s for a smoke session and vice verse.

More Moonchaser headcanons

One time, James teasingly calls Remus "sunshine," and Remus cries because the sun is the antithesis of the moon. He doesn't mind the nickname "Moony," but it's nice to be associated with something so different than the moon. James tells him he's far more like the sun - warm and bright and joyous - and proceeds to use "sunshine" as a pet name alongside his regularly used "love" and "baby."

Speaking of pet names, Remus calls James "my love" and "my darling." James teases him for the low key possessiveness of it, but not so secretly, he loves it.

And speaking of possessivness, despite the stereotypes about werewolves, Remus only gets possessive around the full moon, and it’s mild at worst–glaring at people who look at James too long or smile too flirty and pulling him into broom cupboards to kiss the daylights out of him.

On the other hand, James is ridiculously jealous and possessive. No one can talk to Remus in James’s vicinity without him putting an arm around him or inserting “my boyfriend” into his sentences as often as possible. He’s constantly keeping Remus at his side, nipping his ear or jaw and whispering “mine” anytime Remus so much as looks at another person for too long. Remus thinks he should probably be worried about it but really he loves it, it makes him feel so loved and it soothes Moony.

Outside of James's possessive tendencies, neither of them are huge fans of PDA, though James of course likes it more than Remus. When it's just the Marauders, though, or heaven forbid, just the two of them, Remus is CLINGY as hell. Like, pastes himself to James's side and won't move for anything. He gets grumpy any time James so much as gets up to pee.

Remus hates chocolate (and just sweets in general), so for any holiday where sweets are standard (Valentine's Day, anniversaries, even birthdays and Christmas), James buys him a bunch of spicy and salty snacks instead. All their friends think he's crazy, but it makes Remus SO happy.

James wears Remus’s sweaters. James wears Remus’s sweaters. James wears Remus’s sweaters.

And Remus is OBSESSED with it bc they’re a bit big on him, but on James they cover most of his hands and Remus swears it’s the cutest thing he’s ever seen.
