Letter Four — The Undoing

I wish I could say I hated you for what you turned me into.

I don’t.

You didn’t just ruin me.

You made me complicit in the ruin.

You’d look at me with that calm, collected hunger,

and suddenly every line I swore I’d never cross

started looking negotiable.

You didn’t drag me to the edge.

You stood there and waited

until I walked to you on my own.

You taught me how to crave the version of myself

that only exists in your hands —

the one who stops pretending she’s in control,

the one who doesn’t care if it’s wrong,

the one who knows this ends badly

and still can’t step away.

You made surrender feel like a choice

I kept making

over

and

over.

That’s the worst of it, isn’t it?

You didn’t steal my power.

You convinced me to hand it over

and call it love.

Serendipity 💙 Truth: I wanted to take a photo of this bushy tree because of the eerie, long white strings it has. It only looks this way in winter and I was sure it would create some awesome photos. But every time I passed the tree, either I didn't have my camera with me when the lighting was good or I had my camera but the day was overcast. It seemed like I wasn't going to get the shot. Then, one day, it all comes together. I have the camera and the lighting I need and I'm taking pictures and checking my camera screen thinking, dang, I was right, these shots are so atmospheric, they're coming out just as I imagined they would. That's when I notice the dial of my camera is on a setting I didn't choose and never use. 😜 That setting is what gave the shot the unusual chalky blue tone I was admiring. Lol. Sweet serendipity!
