What’s up you guys! I am kinda ready with my solo trip itinerary and I wanted to share some tips I learned during my stressful process of organizing my itinerary :)

1. Have your computer on incognito mode - I honestly don’t know how websites track your searches but all I know, once you search hotels or flights multiple times the price will eventually go up. I remember the time when my Japan to Philippines flight was saved on my computer (I wanted to see if the price will change) after 2 days of looking the price went $100 more. Then I opened the same site but on incognito mode, it was still the price I was looking earlier. So, always turn off your location. 2. Open google maps and try to coordinate your trip base on location - This tip is a personal preference. I like to go farthest to nearest because I know by the end of my trip I’ll choose the fastest way to go home. It’s always important to know whether you want to save money or time during your trip. 3. Know if you’re going to take the bus or the ferry - If you're like me and you want to save money as much as possible, research all the options you have. check out  https://www.rome2rio.com/ to find the cheapest transportation in your destination. This site helped me so much during my research. It gives you how much the buses and the ferries are. I don’t know how accurate it is but it’s nice to have an estimate.

4. Read reviews - I always choose either lodges or hostels cause it’s cheap and it forces you to talk to people especially when you’re traveling solo. Anyway, make sure to read reviews. Some hostels are more on the “nightlife” type of entertainment. if you’re not into that type of environment then you have to stay away from those types of hostels. Don’t get me wrong it’s fun but it can get tiring sometimes. That’s all I have for now. If you’re looking for this kind of information hopefully my little knowledge will help you out!

I’ve been an avid reader of Messy Nessy Chic for years and I am finally able to put some of knowledge and tips to use! Vanessa was raised in London but made the move to Paris a few years back. Condé Nast Traveler

An ascetically pleasing site with great city guides to boot. You are given the option to choose whether you’re in a city for 3 hours or 3 days. It then tells you what you can do in those time frames in your chosen city. An interesting way of doing things, but I like it! Some of the cities we will be traveling to, we only have a day or so in and optimising our time is important.

my parisian life

my parisian life is similar to Messy Nessy Chic but a little sleeker looking. The content doesn’t go as deep but insightful all the same. They have sections on each arrondissement in Paris which is super helpful purely to understand where things are in relation to each other. Also, rooftop bars = swoon.

Rome2rio

Rome2rio was the first site I used once I found out I was heading to Europe. Not a blog but a key tool to my discovery of Europe. You basically type in all the cities you want to visit and it generates the best ways of travel to each destination. I found I was geographically challenged early on, but Rome2rio set me straight. It’s an amazing tool to help you decide on where you could stopover, how much it will cost and how long it will take to get there via different transport options.

Notable mentions

Skyscanner – Again, not a blog, but god damn cheap flights. The holy grail of flight booking services.

Jungles in Paris – stunning website with a beautiful video on a Coffeehouse in Vienna that I now want too visit.

The New Zealand Herald – read a good article on the most interesting pubs in Dublin.

TimeOut London – not a great site, but found a list of good secondhand store to visit in London.

Hipster in Paris – not as awful as is may sound. A few cool articles on here like a guide to good Dive Bars and cliche advice.

“Rome to Rio”, é assim que se deve ler o nome desta aplicação. Descobri-a por mero acaso, enquanto preparava a minha viagem às Balcãs, e acabei por a usar bem mais do que a aplicação que iria fazer a crítica no blog (fica para a próxima), ao ponto de acabar por escolher a aplicação Rome2rio como crítica do mês.

Há uns meses escrevi um artigo sobre Planear vs Preparar (em inglês) uma viagem, e nesse artigo acabei por dizer que não é boa ideia planear demasiado uma viagem. Curiosamente, com a minha viagem às Balcãs estou a fazer exactamente o contrário. O motivo é ser em época alta, o que não seria um problema, mas vou fazer uma viagem longa em pouco tempo, como tal optei por garantir que pelo menos chego ao aeroporto da cidade de partida. Planear uma viagem que passa por 6 países não é tarefa fácil, e as ligações entre cidades de países diferentes nem sempre são fáceis. Foi aí que descobri primeiro o site, e depois a aplicação Rome2rio.

Limitações

Uma das limitações que notei mais falta é a opção de guardar pesquisas, enquanto preparava a minha viagem tive de pensar em várias rotas possíveis, e por vezes tive de confirmar rotas que tinha pesquisado anteriormente. Seria bem mais fácil poder guardar pesquisas.

A partilha é outra limitação, a única opção de partilha que encontrei aparece na área dos horários (que tem aberta a página da respectiva companhia), e esse botão apenas abre o site no Safari. Não há forma de partilhar com amigos as diversas opções (carro, ferry, autocarro, etc), nem há nenhuma outra funcionalidade de colaboração.

Seria também interessante existir uma opção para critérios de pesquisa, apenas comboios, excluir ferries, etc.

Opinião

A aplicação é simples mas eficaz, faz tudo o que promete mas também não promete muito. Introduzindo um ponto de partida e um ponto de chegada, é devolvida uma lista de opções de transportes. Usei bastante esta aplicação nas últimas semanas, e senti falta de algumas funcionalidades (ler acima), mas foi uma ferramenta fundamental para planear a minha viagem. Simples, informação centralizada e fiável.
