The first time I went to Rome I arrived via train with my friends and fellow students from the College of Architecture @archdesignvt . I remember an overwhelming sense of black and grey. Vespas, cats everywhere, soot on the buildings. I wasn’t very impressed with Rome. Perhaps it was raining too, late fall. My second visit was full of light. The sunny perfect weather of May, the buildings were cleaned and glistening. The stray cats had a homeless shelter where they could hang out. I’m not sure what to do with the Roman forum and other ruin sites. Paint them? Leave them white? Very light wash? . . While painting Rome last year, I accidentally painted over the Piazza Navona. This is okay under the rules that everything but streets and water gets painted but it just didn’t seem right to paint such an intentional open public space.
