The overlook had gotten darker and the last traces of orange had disappeared from the sky. Now everything was lit by moonlight and the distant glow of towns far below. The wind had gotten colder too not freezing but just enough that you found yourself pressing closer against Roman's side.
For a while neither of you says anything you just keep your head resting against his shoulder and Roman's arm draped around your waist. "We should probably head back," you say reluctantly. Roman hums, "Mhm." But neither of you move and a minute passes maybe two. "Seriously," you start smiling, "we're literally still sitting here." Roman glances down, "So are you."
"Cause I'm comfortable..."
Eventually he sighs looking out at the view one last time, "Come on." His arm slips from around your waist and you make a face, "No." Roman looks over, "No?" You hold your arms out dramatically "Carry me." Roman stares at you then actually laughs, "No."
"The emotional labor of loving you!"
Roman rolls his eyes, "You are so full of shit."
You slide off the hood of the car still muttering complaints under your breath. Roman opens the passenger door for you and as you get in you smile brightly, "Ohemgee you opened the door you're so sweet!" He stares blankly at you, "Get in the car." Then he slama the door in your face before you can say something else.
A few minutes later the car is back on the road. The overlook disappearing behind you and the headlights cutting through the darkness. Your hand finds Roman's automatically like it always does. His fingers lace through yours instantly and he asks, "So?" You glance over, "So?" Roman keeps his eyes on the road trying to sound casual, "What was your favorite part?"
"The overlook it was so pretty and the view was beautiful." Roman glances over briefly at how you look genuinely excited still even though it's been hours. "And I liked hearing about you." Roman looks back at the road, "What about me?" You shrug, "Just stuff."
You start counting on your fingers, "Like how you used to go there, how you couldn't sleep, and how you used to drive around." Roman shakes his head trying not to smile and you continue rambling, "And the antique store was so cute."
The conversation keeps bouncing around one memory to another and one story to another. Roman notices every single thing you're talking about involves him. You liked the overlook because he showed it to you. You liked the drive and the antique store because he was there.
"And then when you took my picture-"
Roman looks over, "The polaroid?"
"That was your favorite?"
You smile, "One of them."
"Cause it made me happy :] It felt like one of those days you remember forever."
When the two of you arrive back to your shared apartment you step inside and you kick your shoes off. You're tired but happy still riding the high from the day. Roman locks the door behind you watching as you start talking again, "I still think the overlook was my favorite."
You disappear into the bedroom and Roman follows behind you. He finds you digging through one of the drawers looking for pajamas, "Okay let me shower and get ready for bed."
"Then we're watching movies."
Roman drops onto the mattress, "Who's we?"
You throw a shirt at him, "Me and YOU!" You point at him, "And don't start one without me." The bathroom door closes and a second later the shower starts. Roman sits alone on the edge of the bed listening to the water running down the hall. His eyes drift toward your side of the bed at your phone.
Roman stares at it then reaches over picking it up. The screen lights up and it's a picture of the two of you. Today had been good really good. With no arguments, crying, Sage, or any other bullshit just him and you. You smiled all day and you looked at him like he'd hung the moon.
A small smile appears before he can stop it. It should always be like this the thought slips into his head quietly. Roman unlocks your phone and he already knows the password because you've typed it in front of him dozens of times.
A few taps later he's in your messages and there is Sage. Roman opens the contact and his thumb hovers for a second then he blocks all calls and messages from Sage. He stares at the screen then leans back slightly. Somehow that doesn't feel like enough. Now Sage can't call or text but she can still interact with you instagram.
Roman's thumb taps against the side of the phone thinking. Every time Sage gets involved something goes wrong. Every time there's a fight, argument, or a problem. Roman is so convinced of that thought that it feels factual. His thumb moves again opening Instagram and then hides your stories from Sage.
Roman locks your phone setting it back exactly where he'd found it like it had never been touched. The shower still running and Roman leans back against the headboard closing his eyes. Then the bathroom door opens and you come out in cute little pajamas.
Roman opens one eye, "For what?"
The movie menu glows in the dark room and immediately the fighting starts."Okay," you grab the remote, "It's my turn." Roman doesn't even look up from where he's lying down, "No."
You furrow your brows together, "That was TWO WEEKS AGO."
"It felt like two weeks."
Roman rolls his eyes, "That don't count."
You ignore him and start scrolling. You turn to him, "What about this one?" Roman looks then shakes his head, "No."
"You always watch this fucking movie."
You stare at him completely unimpressed, "Well it's a good movie." You keep scrolling, "What about this one?" Roman reads the description, "Hell no."
"Three best friends discover themselves during a summer in Italy," he looks at you, "What the fuck does that even mean."
"It means it's about friendship."
You throw yourself dramatically across his lap, "You're no fun." Neither of you pick anything just argue about which movie to watch until finally Roman sighs, "Fine." You freeze, "...really?" Roman points one finger at you and flicks your nose, "You get ONE."
The movie starts and it's some overly dramatic opening scene with a girl running through an airport and music swelling. Roman doesn't seem too interested you however are invested. At the beginning of the movie you're still talking and commenting.
Then suddenly nothing just total radio silence from you. Roman doesn't notice at first he's actually paying attention to the movie for once. Then after a minute his eyebrows pull together. He glances down and you're curled against his side with your head resting on his shoulder.
Roman waits surely you're about to say something. Another minute passes but nothing. Roman nudges you slightly with his shoulder, "Baby." A tiny noise comes out of you not words just a sleepy little hum. Roman pauses then looks down again and sees your eyes are closed.
"No fucking way," he reaches over gently shaking your arm, "Baby." Your face scrunches slightly but you don't wake up. Roman is confused because this has never happened. You are the girl who talks through entire movies and who asks a billion questions. Now you're out cold fifteen minutes into the movie. Roman shakes you a little again, "You asleep?" You crack one eye open, "Mmm?"
"You asleep?" You shake your head, "No, then fall back asleep. "You slept in and you took a nap in the car. There's no reason for you to be this tired." You hum softly, "M'tired." That's all the explanation he's getting. Roman stares down at you trying to understand how somebody who slept half the day is somehow asleep again.
He sighs pulling the blanket higher over your shoulder "You're acting weird." Of course he gets no response from you and Roman shakes his head leaning back against the headboard with the movie still playing.
Sage tries not to think about it she really does. She throws her phone onto the bed walks into the kitchen gets water comes back and picks her phone back up but sill nothing. Sage stares at the screen with a worried expression because this isn't normal. Maybe if it were anybody else but not you you always answered.
Maybe not instantly or within five seconds. But eventually you always did. Which is why you not responding feels wrong. The message thread sits open with the last few texts she sent you staring back at her.
sage: roman said some weird shit to me today
sage: he told me you missed your birth control shot???
Sage chews on the inside of her cheek then calls again. The phone rings once then goes straight to voicemail. "What the fuck." She calls again and then two more times and it goes to voicemail. Sage's not annoyed now she's worried really worried. Her mind immediately flashes back to Roman standing in that doorway with that smug look on his face. The way he'd said, "I don't think you're gonna see much of her anytime soon."
Her fingers fly across the keyboard.
sage: okay now ur actually freaking me out
All left on delivered so she goes to your insta. If you're ignoring texts maybe you're posting or active. Just anything that proves you're okay. Sage taps your profile for a second she thinks she's imagining it because you haven't posted anything at your story at all.
She refreshes then refreshes again something feels off. You always post stuff on your story even if it's just once. The more she thinks about it the more Roman's words replay, "You're not gonna be seeing much of her."
Sage lasts approximately fifteen minutes. Fifteen minutes of staring at her phone, of refreshing messages, and of trying to convince herself she's overreacting. Then she gives up and texts Hollis.
