☆ of all the ways Steve had anticipated his night going, watch Fury get shot in his apartment wasn’t one of them. Despite being known as the man with a plan, he didn’t have a plan for this. He and Fury hadn’t necessarily been close, but he respected the man. Knowing that Fury trusted him enough to come to him in his most desperate hour meant a lot too. The guilt at not being able to protect him was steadily settling into his bones. Steve was used to losing soldiers, friends even, but it never really got easier. Besides, this happened in his home - it felt far more personal.
it was seeing Natasha’s reaction that made his gut coil that much tighter. The normally stoic woman was waking the glass like she was waiting for a miracle to happen. The genuine distress he saw on her face as they watched the doctor’s attempt to keep Fury alive was almost pliable, and Steve hated that he couldn’t fix this. He could go after the person that shot him, but that would make Nick get better. Something coiled in his gut as the thought about SHIELD and what Fury had been trying to tell him. His apartment was likely bugged, not that the fact overly surprised him when he really thought about it, and Steve found that while he knew Nick could be a paranoid bastard, this was clearly more than that.
trust no one, that’s what Fury told him, so where did that leave him now. Did that include Natasha? Maria Hill who seemed to have an answer for everything all the time? Steve wasn’t sure, and that left him vulnerable. Clenching his jaw, Steve stood solidly next to Natasha as he murmured, ‘ whoever did this is enhanced. they weren’t the run of the mill assassin. ‘
