the whole crew is trapped, they're separated from the stablaster, and most of the crew has died. it's just and davenport, they're backed into a corner and barry needs to use necromancy to reanimate the corpses of his family to help them fight off a threat they didn't know existed until it started killing them.

Barry and Davenport are backed against a rock, within visible distance of the Starblaster, and the Hunger’s army is filling the space between them. Barry’s been firing off spells, but he can only do so much. Copies of Davenport weave around the dark figures, but most of them aren’t distracted by the illusions.

“Merle,” Davenport growls. In his report of the last Hunger parlay, the cleric had mentioned his specialty in illusory magic. It couldn’t possibly be a coincidence that suddenly, far more of the things sent to fight them had Truesight.

Barry is running out of spell slots too quickly just keeping them alive, and they’re not even moving forwards. “Cap, we need–  we need a different strategy before I run outta juice.”

“Can you summon undead creatures? Anything to clear a path for us.”

“They don’t leave corpses,” Barry says. They both narrowly avoid several black arrows that pierce the solid rock behind them. “Wait, unless… shit.”

“Do it,” Davenport commands. He hopes he’s wrong about what Barry’s thinking of, but it’s probably their only chance.

Barry hesitates for barely a second. “C-cover me.”

The Starblaster’s pilot doesn’t specialize in head-on fights, but sure, he can play defense for a minute.

It’s hard to reanimate things you can’t see, let alone at long distance, but Barry’s good enough to do it. He puts both hands on the ground, one open-palmed and the other closed around an arcane focus (one of several backups). For once, it’s fortunate that the earth is dying, because that makes it easier to feel his friends through it.

Not his friends, he tells himself. Dead bodies. Like any other corpses he’s ever resurrected, their souls aren’t there, so the bodies’ (former) identities mean nothing.

Magnus(’s corpse) is first to be found, by virtue of taking up the most surface area. The others aren’t too far away. Once they’re all pinpointed, Barry does what he does best: necromancy.

Cold energy creeps through their backs into their chests. Barry’s hands are freezing– painfully so, because of how far he has to push the power– but he presses his weight onto his hands to keep them steady. There’s a certain awkwardness to reanimating fresh corpses, too; they’re warm, and it’s tricky to push cold magic through their veins. But they do tend to be sturdier, more flexible.

Once he’s got them awake, Barry gives his command: GET US TO THE SHIP.

New corpses are also more energetic. All of them spring up and bolt towards the living pair. And it’s perfect timing, too, because Davenport misses a beat in his fight and gets sent flying into Barry. Thank goodness he’s done concentrating on the spell.

Magnus is the most useful of the undead. The others don’t have their brains working to cast magic, but muscle memory stays in place. They all do alright, though: everyone’s got at least a little fight experience, if only from Magnus insisting they spar.

It’s just barely enough. All of the fallen crew members have been taken out once again by the time Davenport and Barry get onto the ship. The ship’s been taking a beating too, but it’s fine, they can fix it later, it has to still function… Right?

honestly one of the kindest people ever and I really hate timezones because when i go to sleep she wakes up and it’s just so ugh frustrating because I haven’t been able to talk to Becci for a while as much as I would like because of that, ya know? anything going wrong for barry and him saying "taako, kill me". he forgets some paperwork "taako, kill me". he has to eat merles 'meatloaf surprise "taako kill me". and in return taako just spinning around and going "who?". "this is snuffles he is my 1467th dog" "who?". "hey uh, taako me and lup are having dinner at fantasy olive garden, wanna come?" "who? jk my dude, hells to the yeah i wanna go!" ect ect. (1/2)

lup makes a "back soon" joke one time and taako and barry swivel around, and run to her. one hold either arm and they dont let go. this just stand, clasping to her as barry starts to cry, his glasses fogging up. the brim of taako's hat has slipped down to cover his face. "lup. dont leave again. I-" as hes broken off by a sob "i cant take that again" "babe i wont, i was kidding." taako lifts his face, mascara running down his cheeks "hey lulu? mm. mm mm mm. mmmmm. mm" (2/2)

i think it’s pretty much a matter of “who?”/”taako kill me” happened one time and they didn’t really think about it at the time, and in hindsight it’s fucking hilarious? but “back soon” was too real they had to read that note every day for fucking months and cried every time
