If he only knew about the Culinerds’ obsession with tiny food… this plate of (secretly sweet) ‘bittergarnituur’ was served with the coffee.
Even though we love to eat our home made dinners, every now and then we feel the urge to go out and enjoy something really special. This time we went to Ron Blaauws’ restaurant in Oudekerk aan de Amstel. Not only because we already knew the food is really good, but also because we were able to go there by bike: cycling home after a big dinner and lots of wine, through beautiful nature, can be recommended for a fresh end of a wonderful evening.
The focus in Ron Blaauw’s kitchen this year is on vegetables, grown in a specially selected garden. All three of us could appreciate this approach. Salomé especially, since she seams to have been a rabbit in a previous life; David now aims to become one when he reincarnates. The menu 'Groen' contained many different beautiful, wonderfully-smelling and tastebud-caressing courses. Allow us to tell you about our favourites.
David ‘Summer vegetables with marrow bone, brown butter and a little mustard’ Arranged in a line were seven different vegetables. Accompanying each other perfectly in taste, texture and colour. But then, what doesn’t taste good combined with marrow bone?
Salomé Cauliflower, Messeklever cheese, biological onion and Baambrugs bacon. This way, I’ll eat cauliflower every day!
Anna Beef, leek, oxtail and tarragon. Though the veggies were delicious and diverse, the beautiful tenderness of the beef came as a very pleasant suprise, especially being accomponied by such great ingredients. Perfect balance! (No wonder, Anna considers tarragon to be the most underestimated fine herb.)
All this was accompanied by an original selection of wines that even managed to get us silent from time to time during the evening.
There couldn’t have been a bigger difference between the beautiful courses and our crappy bikes when we walked outside, but the late summer night breeze almost came close to what we smelled at Ron’s restaurant. And though we had already been there before, it was once again a true culinary adventure!
